ARCATA — An unwavering resolve kept Humboldt State on track Saturday, lifting the Lumberjacks to a four-set upset of No. 15 nationally ranked Cal State Los Angeles in a California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball match.
In claiming the 25-21, 33-31, 22-25, 25-18 victory, the Lumberjacks improved to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA. After winning its first nine games to start the season, Cal State L.A. dropped its second straight match on a tough roadtrip, falling to 9-2 and 2-2 in league.
"We're a team with many skills on the court if we execute those, we will do well," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "We played intelligent volleyball, without stretches of unforced errors. When we did make an error, we quickly recovered."
Defense kept the Jacks fueled throughout, highlighted by an acrobatic performance from libero
Dani Nelson. The junior from Kalama, Wash., finished with a team-high 22 digs, and was supported at the net by
Danielle Wells, who paced the team with nine blocks.
Offensively,
Lynsey Adams topped HSU with 15 kills while Jo Arzadon added 13 and hit at a .306 percentage. Gabriela Bulawczyk powered the Golden Eagles, contributing a match-high 28 kills.
Humboldt State opened the evening quickly, showing the home fans and their opponents that they weren't intimidated by the Eagles' lofty ranking. The Jacks held the lead through most of the set, earning match point on Nelson's service ace and finishing the win with an Adams' kill.
Set No. 2 was a tight battle throughout, neither squad willing to give ground. The Golden Eagles held off several match points before gaining an advantage of their own. HSU returned the favor and finally earned the win on consecutive attack errors by Cal State L.A.
In the third set, the Golden Eagles rallied for four straight points to put some distance between themselves and the Lumberjacks at 20-17. They continued to surge despite a brief Jacks' comeback attempt, finally earning the win on Bulawczyk's kill down the line.
Never looking back, the Jacks rolled ahead by as many as eight points in the fourth set. They held off the Eagles' comeback attempts, ending the match with two kills from Arzadon.
Humboldt State is back in Lumberjack Arena this week, playing two more CCAA matches. Cal State Monterey Bay comes to town for a 7 p.m. match Friday and San Francisco State faces the Lumberjacks at the same time Saturday.
