ARCATA — Rallying from a 13-point deficit, Humboldt State finally found its shooting touch to emerge with a 61-55 win over Cal Poly Pomona in Lumberjack Arena on
Friday.
With the win the Jacks improved their record to 13-4 overall and stayed on top the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings with a 6-1 mark. Cal Poly Pomona dropped to 7-5 overall and 3-4 in league games.
Ernie Spada scored 13 points, with both Zac Tiedeman and Kyle Baxter each adding 10 to lead Humboldt State's offense. David Howard had nine points while
Jameson Figgatt added eight points and a team-best six rebounds in another balanced effort.
Austin Swift led Cal Poly Pomona with 17 points, and Walter Thompson added 12. Larry Gordon topped all players with 14 rebounds.
The Lumberjacks achieved the win the hard way after an ice-cold start, missing from all areas of the floor on the way to a 28 percent first half shooting effort. Cal Poly Pomona took advantage, forging ahead behind its inside tandem of Gordon and Swift.
The Broncos claimed their largest cushion of the opening half, 33-20 on a pair of free throws by Walter Thompson. Spada dropped in a jumper to cut the lead to 33-22 heading into the break.
"We were trying too hard in the first half, and seemed tight," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "We loosened up in the second half and the shots started to fall."
The Lumberjacks trailed by 13 again early in the second half, and didn't start their surge back into contention until 11:55 remained on the clock. Tiedeman hit three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt, and then nailed his next trey to pull HSU within four at 40-36.
Swift answered with a three, but the Jacks reclaimed the momentum with seven straight points, drawing even at 43-43 on Kyle Baxter's high-flying dunk off a perfect lob pass from Tiedeman. The run continued, extending the Jacks' advantage to seven on Spada's three-pointer before Cal Poly Pomona made a last dash of its own.
Again it was Swift who led the charge, draining consecutive jumpers to cut HSU's lead to three at 50-47. With time running out the Broncos were forced to foul, however, and Figgatt, Tiedeman and Spada combined for eight straight free throws to seal the victory.
"We feel good about having Zac and Ernie in the position to hit free throws when we need them in that situation," Wood said. "And
Jameson Figgatt is a senior who is playing like a senior. He works hard, and good things happen."
Humboldt State is back in Lumberjack Arena on
Saturday, taking on Cal State San Bernardino at 7:30 p.m. The Coyotes are coming off
Friday's 75-64 loss to Sonoma State.
