Physical battle goes in favor of Coyotes

ARCATA — Playing the physical style of basketball that has typified their program for years, the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes outbattled Humboldt State, 92-80 Saturday, sending the Jacks to their first home loss in California Collegiate Athletic Association play this season.

The two teams dropped back into a tie for first place in the CCAA one day after the Jacks had gained an advantage. HSU is now 13-5 overall and 6-2 in league while Cal State San Bernardino moved to 8-6 and 6-2.

"(The Coyotes) came here with attitude after losing (to Sonoma State) last night," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "We didn't have that same attitude going for us."

Tim Denison's penetration drives helped him lead all players with 25 points, while CSUSB teammate Brandon Brown, just added to the team during the semester break, scored 22 with 11 rebounds. DuBois Williams had 17 points for the Coyotes.

"Brown's a nice player that makes them tougher," Wood said. "We didn't have an answer for him tonight."

Zac Tiedeman and David Howard led the Lumberjacks comeback in the game's late minutes, helping them pull within seven points after trailing by as many as 16. Tiedeman finished with 19 points for Humboldt State and Howard had 18 points and nine rebounds, while Kevin Atkins contributed 11 points for the Jacks.

Several times during the evening the physical play got out of control, leading to a pair of technical fouls and some other unusual circumstances. Cal State San Bernardino's Brown accumulated five fouls, but was allowed to remain on the floor for an extra trip down court, and play was stopped in the closing minutes to award a free throw that had resulted from a foul on an earlier possession.

In the end, Humboldt State couldn't find a way to stop the Coyotes, whose physical style forced the Jacks into a season-high 19 turnovers. Cal State San Bernardino also benefited from 29 trips to the free throw line, sinking 24 foul shots.

Humboldt State returns to action next week, going on the road to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday.
