ARCATA — Humboldt State scored on every one of its possessions in overtime, escaping with a 76-74 win over San Francisco State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball game
Friday.
Zac Tiedeman hit a jumper with 13 seconds remaining to put HSU up 75-71, but the resilient Gators weren't finished. Brad Visman drained a three-pointer to pull his team within one, and after a foul,
Ernie Spada made one of two free throws for the Jacks on the other end.
San Francisco State got the ball back with 4.9 seconds remaining, but Robert Hayes missed a driving layin in traffic to end the game.
Humboldt State improved its record to 9-4 overall while moving to 2-1 in league. Off to its best start since the 1952-53 season, the Gators dropped to 8-2 and 2-1 in the CCAA.
"I'm very proud of our guys, proud of their toughness
tonight," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "To play basketball at this level, you have to have that toughness. They played hard, and they finished the job."
Four players scored in double digits for the Jacks, and all 12 players on the roster saw significant court time. Kevin Atkins led the way with 16 points, Keith Davis had 13, Tiedeman added 12 and Spada finished with 10 for HSU.
Leading the Gators were Will Logan and Brad Visman with 18 points each, and Visman also hit double digits in rebounds with 16 boards. Martin Flores, seeing his first action since gaining eligibility at the semester, added 10 points for SFSU.
The momentum see-sawed throughout, San Francisco State leading by as many as 10 points in the first half. Atkins finished off the half by hitting a three-pointer and a layup, giving the Lumberjacks a 30-27 lead at the break.
HSU owned the early minutes of the second half, forging a 40-30 lead on Atkins' free throw with 15:15 remaining. San Francisco State quickly responded with a 14-2 run to grab the lead on a three-pointer by Logan.
Neither team could break away, and the game headed to overtime when HSU's Kyle Baxter drove for a layin to forge a tie at 65-65 with 41 seconds left in regulation. San Frrancisco State maintained possession until Tiedeman came up with a steal with two seconds remaining to prevent a final shot.
