ARCATA — A quirk in the conference schedule finds the Jacks with a quick turnaround that sends them on the road for a
Wednesday game against Sonoma State. Originally slated for
Thursday per conference rules that accommodate stand-alone school UC San Diego, the game was changed because of a mixup with the master schedule and officiating assignments. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
Humboldt State returns home
Thursday with an extra day to prepare for UC San Diego. The Tritons visit Arcata on
Saturday, with game time scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
On-the-Air: All Lumberjack basketball games are broadcast live locally on KATA, 1340 AM, the North Coast's ESPN radio affiliate. Webcasts are also available for out-of-area listeners, accessed through the Humboldt State Athletics site at hsujacks.com. …Bicoastal Media Sports Director J.B. Head-to-Head: The Jacks' win over Sonoma State earlier this season in Lumberjack Arena gives HSU a 40-34 edge in the all-time series. Each team claimed a victory on its home court in last year's two-game series. …UCSD defeated the Jacks, 80-67, earlier this season at La Jolla, but the Jacks still lead the all-time series 5-2. The squads also defeated one another on their home courts last year.
Promotions: Humboldt State's Lindy Hop Club will perform during
Saturday's halftime. Lumberjack players will also honor their favorite professors during halftime of the men's and women's games.
Lumberjack Notes: Halfway through the league season the Jacks remain in the hunt for first place, currently standing in a tie for second place with a 7-3 CCAA mark. At the same time last year the Jacks had the same 7-3 record in conference and were 12-5 overall as compared to this year's 14-6 mark. "We feel good about where we are right now," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "We can say we're contenders. But we also now that the enemy in this league is always a worthy on. We have to be at our best every time out if we expect to win." …Three of the Jacks' next four games are on the road. They finish the season with four of the last six at home. …Among the league's individual statistical leaders are Lumberjacks
Ernie Spada and Zac Tiedeman. Spada tops the league in three-pointers made with an average of 2.4 per game, and Tiedeman leads in free throw percentage (.889) and is tied for first in assists/turnovers ratio at 2.2. …A second chance against opponents offers teams an opportunity to correct what went wrong the first time out, and that's exactly what the Jacks will focus upon in practice sessions this week. Humboldt State escaped with an 80-78 win over Sonoma State in the teams' earlier games, and will look to reverse its problems from that game and the loss to UCSD. "We'll make some adjustments, but in many ways we're a different team than we were the first time we faced them," Wood said. "We're still a work in progress. We're searching for that consistency, some definites that we can count on every game." …Junior forward Kevin Atkins gave the Jacks a balanced effort last weekend, averaging 12 points and 6.5 rebounds in the road split. Atkins' 15 points and nine rebounds fell just short of achieving his first HSU double-double. "He had a nice weekend," Wood said. "The key is keeping him fresh. When he's fresh, he can come in and make plays and better decisions." …The first NCAA Division II West Region poll is scheduled to be released
Wednesday. The rankings continue on a weekly basis until the final poll comes out on March 4, followed by the selection of eight teams to the NCAA Division II West Region Tournament, announced March 8.
Opponents Notes: Sonoma State is 7-10 overall and 3-7 in league after dropping its last three games. Last weekend the Seawolves lost to both Cal State LA (70-59) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (79-56) on the road. Prior to their string of losses, however, the Seawolves knocked off CSU San Bernardino, 75-64, at home, the same weekend the Jacks fell to those same Coyotes. …Junior forward James Sandoval is SSU's top scorer with an average of 11.3 points per game. Ben Washington averages 9.8 points per contest, and Keith Garner is the Seawolves' rebounding leader with 4.6 per contest. …Winners of four straight, UC San Diego is 10-6 overall and shares second place with HSU and CSUSB with a 7-3 mark. …The Tritons are a balanced team, offensively, led by junior Jordan Lawley's 14.2 points per game. Senior Kelvin Kim, a three-point specialist, averages 11.1 points per game, and Shane Poppen, a senior guard, scores at a 10.7 ppg clip. He's also the team's top rebounder with 7.9 boards per game.
Wood's Words: "We have a lot of respect for Sonoma State, and we know that nothing will come easy against them. They get after it and always play hard, so we'll have to play our best." … "UCSD is one of the best teams in this league. Theyhave six seniors playing significant minutes, and our a really experienced team. Expect them to play good defense and discplined offense, and they're good at getting their shooters open. It's also difficult to get runs going against their defense."
