ARCATA — Chico State put together impressive runs in the second and third sets, overcoming Humboldt State leads both times on the way to a 23-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-10 victory in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball Friday.
Gillian Heydorff led the way in both surges on her way to a match-high 19 kills, five coming during a 9-0 Wildcats' run that finished off the second set. In the fourth set, it was Heydorff's serving that did the damage, the senior putting away four aces in a 7-0 run that rallied Chico State from a 24-19 deficit.
"Chico State was serving well, and we got stuck in rotations that we couldn't get out of," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "On the other side, we started missing our serve, and they started passing well."
The loss drops Humboldt State to 6-10 overall and 2-6 in league games heading into Saturday's 7 p.m. home match against Cal State Stanislaus. Chico State improved to 13-4 overall and 4-3 in the CCAA.
Humboldt State opened the match strong, building a five-point lead early and then maintaining on the way to the first-set win. Two service aces by
Callan Finney and
Oceana Matsubu's kill helped HSU salt it away.
Matsubu paced the Jacks in building a seven-point advantage in the second set on her way to a team-high 13 kills.
Danielle Wells and
Allison Drobish both had six kills in support of Matsubu's efforts.
The Jacks' block came alive in the third set, allowing HSU to gain a 10-4 lead before the Wildcats forged their way back. Makenzie Snyder was the primary weapon for Chico State, achieving six of her 18 kills in the victorious third.
Humboldt State came out flat in the fourth set, and offered little challenge in allowing the Wildcats to pull away.
"It was a very streaky match on both sides," Woodstra said. "We couldn't find any consistency when we needed it."
HSU again out-blocked its opponent, finishing with 10.5 team blocks to 3 for Chico State. Wells had six block assists and Jo Arzadon added five for the Jacks.
