Warriors keep Jacks off balance in 3-0 loss

ARCATA — Never quite finding a rhythm, Humboldt State volleyball dropped its fifth straight match Saturday, losing to CSU Stanislaus in three straight sets.

Cal State Stanislaus improved to 7-9 overall with the 26-24, 25-20, 25-16 victory, winning for the first time in California Collegiate Athletic Association for a 1-7 league mark. Humboldt State fell to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in the CCAA.

Liane Vicchio's 16 kills and Melissa Bishop's 11 helped the Warriors put the Jacks away. CSU Stanislaus also out-did the league's leading blockers, finishing with eight team blocks to HSU's three. Andrea Fett paced the Warriors in that category with two block solos and five block assists.

"We were very undisciplined (with the block)," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "We start drifting around out there and stop thinking."

Humboldt State was led offensively by Danielle Wells and Oceana Matsubu, each totaling eight kills.  Despite their efforts, the Jacks were unable to generate any momentum, fading as the match wore on.

"We're displaying a lack of confidence, and there's no reason for that," Woodstra said. "We go into every match, 0-0. It's time to step out and prove ourselves."

HSU has another chance to right itself at home this week when it hosts UC San Diego on Friday and Cal State East Bay on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
