Tiedeman, Lumberjacks take down Toros, 76-58

Zac Tiedeman drives during Saturday's win over CSUDH.
ARCATA – Five players scored in double digits as Humboldt State opened up a 16-point lead by the half on the way to a 76-58 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.

With the win, the Jacks improved to 3-2 on the season and 2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. One of last year's regular-season tri-CCAA champions, Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped to 0-4 and is 0-2 following the opening weekend of league play.

Senior point guard Zac Tiedeman set the tone for HSU, finishing with 10 points and eight assists without committing a turnover. As a team the Jacks committed only six turnovers to the Toros' 12, and HSU also won the battle of the boards with 38 rebounds to CSUDH's 28.

"Zac gave us some confidence out there, and his teammates respond to that," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "We have a number of weapons out there who can score, but we're obviously not the same team when Zac isn't on the floor."

Starting in place of Brian Morris for the second straight night, Keith Davis topped the Jacks in scoring with 13 points and rebounding with seven boards. His three-pointer off of a Tiedeman assist finished the first half, moving HSU ahead, 39-23 at the break.

Morris, out for the past 11 days with an injury, came off the bench to add 11 points for HSU in only 11 minutes of playing time. Also in double figures were Kyle Baxter and Kevin Atkins, each with 10 points.

Cal State Dominguez Hills managed to keep pace in the second half through the efforts of Tim McLaurin, who led the Toros with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. John Staats also finished in double digits with 12 points, and Tim McGrath added eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.

"We slid into complaceny in the second half after we got a substantial lead," Wood said. "But we've made progress this weekend. I'm proud of the toughness and tenacity our guys brought this weekend."

Humboldt State plays a single home game this week, facing Sonoma State in a CCAA matchup Saturday.
