Lumberjack Notes
Ten players saw double-digit playing time in the Jacks' win Saturday, and 13 total saw court time against CSU Dominguez Hills. That variety in the lineup played a critical role in Humboldt's efforts, which included a high-energy defense. Still, the Jacks have been missing one of their higher-energy players, sophomore guard Will Petty, who was out of action for both league games due to illness. Petty is expected to return to practices this week as recovery allows. …After missing Thursday's game because of a lingering knee injury, junior post Brian Morris tested his leg with some success Saturday. In only 11 minutes of playing time he put up 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, and also grabbed five rebounds. "Obviously, a healthy Brian Morris makes us better," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "He isn't near 100 percent yet, partly because he had to miss 11 practices. He'll be even more effective when he's back to the point where he can play our style of game." …Sophomore guard David "DJ" Broome was very effective on the Jacks' press, dishing two assists and making two steals in 14 minutes of playing time. The 5-5 crowd favorite also drained a three-pointer, his first as a Lumberjack. …Five games into the season, four Lumberjacks are averaging in double figures scoring. Leading the way is Morris with his average of 14.3 points per game, followed by Kevin Atkins' 13.2. Zac Tiedeman averaged 11.8 ppg and Kyle Baxter 10.2.

Opponent Notes
Sonoma State is off to a 1-5 start, splitting last week's two home games. Led by Steven Pratt's 23 points, the Seawolves opened CCAA play with a 76-75 victory over CSU Dominguez Hills on Thursday before falling to Cal State Los Angeles, 77-72 on Saturday. Sterling Arterberry and Kyle Shandera both scored 16 points in that game. …Pratt rejoined the Seawolves for their past two games after sitting out three games due to an injury. …Another common opponent SSU shares with HSU is Hawaii Pacific. The Seawolves opened their own Ron Logsdon Classic with a buzzer-beating 77-76 loss to HPU n Nov. 20.

Wood's Words
"Having only one game this week helps us take a slower pace in preparation without changing focus. We're also planning shorter practices as student-athletes get ready for their final projects and exams." … "Looking back at last week, what jumps out at me is that this is the first time this year we've been able to stop people. Our defensive fundamentals were sound, and we rebounded well." … "Sonoma State appears to be a young, inexperienced team trying to find its way. But the coaching staff likes the team they have. Don't be surprised to see Sonoma State improving a lot."
