HSU's effort unrewarded in overtime loss to Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO — Heartbreakers come in a wide variety in the game of basketball, but not many end as Humboldt State's did Friday night. An offensive foul called under the basket was the play that dashed the Jacks' hopes in an 86-84 Lumberjack overtime loss to Cal State San Bernardino.

With 6.8 seconds on the clock, Humboldt State rebounded a missed CSUSB free throw, and quickly worked the ball down court to Kyle Baxter.  The freshman drove the lane and tossed up a shot, watching it fall home as time expired, apparently forcing another overtime period.

Game officials, however, had a different look, and a tangle of bodies under the basket. They whistled an offensive foul on Baxter, waving off the basket and ending the game.

The loss dropped HSU to 19-8 overall and 12-5 in the CCAA, while Cal State San Bernardino improved to 14-9 in all games and also 12-5 in league.

Devin Montgomery stepped up in overtime for CSU San Bernardino, scoring seven points in the extra five minutes. Brown scored five points in the extra period, but missed two free throws that would have iced it to set up Baxter's final attempt.

Humboldt State found a variety of options in nearly pulling off the victory, led by Kevin Atkins' 23 points and nine rebounds. Zac Tiedeman scored 18 points, Ernie Spada had 13 and Baxter 10 for HSU.

Cal State San Bernardino rode the thrust of two key players – Brandon Brown, who finished with a game-high 29 points and 12 rebounds, and Montgomery, who added 25 points.

As regulation wound down, the Coyotes appeared poised for victory when Lawrence Tyson hit a three-pointer from the corner with 32 seconds remaining.  But Spada answered with one of his own to tie the game at 72-72.

Montgomery threw the ball away, and the Jacks had a chance to win when they got the ball back with five seconds remaining. Tiedeman drove the court and pulled up for a 20-foot jumper, but it hit the front iron and fell off, forcing overtime.

After trailing by seven points at halftime, Cal State San Bernardino led by as many as nine points in the second half before HSU rallied behind Tiedeman, who hit back-to-back three-pointers to draw the Jacks even at 67-67 with 2:43 remaining.

Humboldt State remains on the road for Saturday's CCAA game against Cal Poly Pomona. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
