Lumberjacks lose second straight road game

POMONA — Cal Poly Pomona extended its winning streak to eight straight, holding on to claim an 68-59 win over Humboldt State and drop the Jacks into fourth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings.

The Broncos improved to 17-6 overall and 13-5 in the CCAA while the Jacks fell to 19-9 and 12-6. Two more games remain to be played in the CCAA's regular season, with the league tourmanent seedings to be decided.

Cal Poly Pomona finally broke away in the waning seconds, hitting its free throws to ease further ahead in a game that was tight most of the way. Austin Swift, with 16 points, and Walter Thompson, with 15, padded their toals with seven and eight free throws, respectively, to lead the Broncos' scoring.

Humboldt State received 16 points from Kevin Atkins and 12 from Ernie Spada in losing for the second straight night on the road.

Humboldt State managed only two points in the game's first five minutes, and the result was a 12-2 Cal Poly Pomona lead. Frustrated from the field by the Broncos' defense, the Jacks even missed free throws while CPP was shooting 70 percent from the field.

Atkins hit a three-pointer from the top of the key, and Spada hit another on the next possession to spurt an HSU comeback. Atkins trimmed the lead to 12-11 with another three-pointer, this time from the corner.

Will Petty, making his first start, gave the Jacks a lift during their rapid rise, driving for a layup and free throw, then pulling up for a jumper. But the Broncos went back inside to Dwayne Fels and Tobias Jahn, who hit layups to extend the lead to six again.

Keith Davis added to the HSU offense with two driving layups, and Owen Newman posted up for a layup and hit the free throw after being fouled. The Jacks then took a 26-24 lead on quick release three by Tiedeman.

Cal Poly led again, but it was HSU claiming the final momentum of the first half. A pair of Atkins' free throws sent Humboldt State into the break with a 31-26 lead.

Again, the Broncos had the better of the early minutes in the second half, drawing even at 34-34 when Jahn dropped in a short scoop shot. After several empty possessions on both sides, Bahir Nasser was fouled shooting a three-pointer, and he hit all three free throws to give his team the 37-34 lead.

The lead grew to as many as seven points, HSU only putting up three points during the first 10 minutes of the half. Humboldt State then posted a frantic rally, Atkins' layup bringing the Jacks within two at 43-41.

Cal Poly Pomona scored the next six points, however, Larry Gordon's putback giving them a 49-41 lead. The closest the Jacks would come the rest of the way was five points.

Humboldt State finishes the CCAA regular season at home this week, hosting Cal State Los Angeles on Friday and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
