Jacks fall despite Tiedeman's huge effort

LAIE, Hawaii — With multiple weapons in its arsenal, BYU Hawaii fended off every Humboldt State surge to claim a 98-84 win over the Lumberjacks and end their season at the NCAA Division II West Region Championships on Friday.

Despite missing practice all week after suffering from pneumonia, junior Zac Tiedeman led HSU's charge, finishing with 27 points to lead all players. But BYUH had too many options, six Seasiders scoring in double digits to extend their winning streak to 23 straight.

The Lumberjacks season ends with a 20-12 record while BYUH improved to 26-1 heading into Saturday's regional semifinal against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

BYU Hawaii was led by Virgil Buensuceso's 21 points and Luca Alves, who added 17. Nathan Sims finished with 15 points, Tsung-Hsien Chang had 12, Jermaine Odjegba had 13, and Trenson Akana had 10 for the Seasiders.

Aiding the Seasiders' cause were 40 trips to the free throw line, where they scored 28 of their points. Humboldt State, which was assesed with 40 fouls, managed 6-of-8 from the free throw line on the evening.

Leading by 19 points following a tip-in by Odjegba with 15 minutes, 24 seconds remaining, the Seasiders watched the Jacks rally within single-digits at 64-55 when Tiedeman hit a three-pointer. BYUH answered, pushing it to 15 again, but again it was Tiedeman who trimmed the lead to 76-67 with another bomb.

"His performance borders on heroic," HSU head coach Tom Wood said, about his junior point guard. "He was dehydrated, he was cramping up and not feeling good. But that didn't stop him. And when he's out there, we have confidence."

The Seasiders edged ahead by 13 following back to back dunks by Alves, but the Jacks rallied again, pulling within five when Tiedeman drove for a layup with four minutes remaining. But BYUH scored its final 10 points from the free throw line to keep the Jacks' at bay.

With nearly a full slate of new players in the program, Humboldt State advanced to the NCAA postseason for the eighth time in nine years. Figgatt and Owen Newman were the lone seniors who won't be returning next year.

"I'm proud of my players for their effort," Wood said. "It's not easy to muster that kind of energy in that environment. We fought through some adversity and I'm proud of the fact that we battled to the end. That's a testament to why we were here."
