Jacks drop two tight matches on opening day

ROHNERT PARK — After gaining a 2-1 advantage, Humboldt State was unable to finish off Dominican University, falling in five games to the Penguins to finish off an 0-2 start to the season Friday at the Seawolf Spike Tournament.

After losing to the Penguins 25-20, 26-28, 25-18, 14-25 9-15, the Lumberjacks hope to even up their record with a pair of wins when action continues Saturday. They also dropped an earlier match Friday, falling to Central Washington 21-25, 17-25, 24-26.

In the day's final match Friday, the Jacks gained the first game win behind Jo Arzadon, who served a pair of aces to help the Jacks gain an early 9-5 lead. Caitlin Dugan's block closed out the game in favor of the Jacks.

Humboldt State fell short in a tight second game, but took game three when Oceana Matsubu put away a kill. Matsubu finished the match with a team-high 15 kills.

The Lumberjacks were unable to sustain their momentum, however, dropping the next two games to finish the season's opening day winless.

In the earlier match,  HSU was led offensively by Matsubu's nine kills. Emily Nuss had 25 digs and Allison Drobish put up six block assists for the Lumberjacks.

As a team, the Jacks out-blocked the Wildcats, 13-4. They finished the opening day with 20 team blocks, Danielle Wells leading the way in the second contest with one solo and three block assists.

Humboldt State is back on the court Saturday for a 2 p.m. match against Northwest Nazarene University. The Jacks finish the tournament with a 7 p.m. match against Western Oregon.
