HSU men head north for non-league action

ARCATA – After shutting out William Jessup University, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in its season-opener, the Humboldt State men's soccer team (1-0-0) heads out for a three-game road trip to Washington.  The Jacks will face Seattle Pacific, Western Washington and Saint Martin's on the northern swing.

Head-to-Head

The Jacks have never beaten the Seattle Pacific Falcons in 13 tries for an 0-11-2 all-time record.  The last meeting, a 0-0 tie, came in 2005, Humboldt State's final year in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). …The Western Washington Vikings hold a 3-13-1 lead in the series with Humboldt State. The Jacks took the last meeting, 2-1, in 2006 in Arcata.  …Humboldt State hold a 2-0-0 record all-time against the Saints and took the last match, 2-1, last year in Lacey, Wash.

“I was very pleased with the way we played on Saturday. The things we have worked on for the past three weeks have taken root and the team is executing.  This week we are playing some good teams, but if we play up to our potential there is no reason why we can't come away with multiple victories on this trip.”

The Jacks opened the season with a 3-0 win over William Jessup. …The goals all came in the second half. … Scott Mariani netted the first at 54:23. … Just over six minutes later Josh Suggs scored off a Mariani assist and Peter Darquea got the third in the 83rd minute for the final margin. …The win marked the debut of head coach Christian Johnson and was the first victory in a head coaching debut at HSU since Mike Szarek did it in 1971, the first season of Jacks' soccer. … Suggs led the Lumberjacks with seven shots against WJU.

The Seattle Pacific Falcons (1-0-0) won their season- and home-opener on Saturday, defeating San Francisco State, 2-0.
