Lumberjack Notes
After coming up empty on the CCAA's toughest roadtrip, the Jacks fell to 8-5 overall and are now 5-3 in league games. This week's games bring the Jacks close to the midway point of conference action, underscoring the importance of home success. "Having three losses in conference, we can't afford to love many, if any, more," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "There's still a lot of ground to cover in these two months, however. We have to grind through." … Areas the Jacks will address this week in practice include rebounding, defense and mental tenacity. "We identified these area that need to be pounded home, and they all are areas that reflect toughness," Wood said. "We get fatigued and start making bad decisions. We lose our ability to score in the face of severe defensive pressure. We played hard last week, but not hard enough." … Despite being on the road and away from their own familiar hoops, the Lumberjacks managed an outstanding weekend from the free throw line. As a team, Humboldt State was 29-of-33 shooting free throws for 87 percent. For the season, the Jacks rank second in league in free throw shooting at 72 percent. …Individually, Jacks' sophomore Will Petty ranks second in the CCAA in 3-point shooting percentage with a .565 accuracy. …Brian Morris played through an ankle sprain last weekend, but should be good to go for this week's game. Tiedeman suffered leg cramps that kept him out of the final minutes at Pomona, but should be back to 100 percent for the weekend. "Losing Zac didn't help us. His problem is a result of working so hard, so we need to figure out what to do about it," Wood said. "Overall, we don't have any health excuses. There's nothing going on that should keep anybody out of the game."

Opponents' Notes

Chico State heads into this week's roadtrip with a 9-2 overall record, and is 5-1 in the CCAA. The Wildcats swept a pair of road games last week, defeating UC San Diego, 77-68, and Cal State East Bay, 68-53. …Leading the Wildcats' offense is senior guard Jon Baird, at 15. 6 points per game. Junior forward Terence Pellumn, who transfered in from Foothill JC, is averaging 13.4 points per game.  The 'Cats' top rebounder is junor forward Roderick Hawkins with 6.7 boards per game. …Greg Clink is in his second season as Chico State's head coach. …Cal State Stanislaus opened its season with four wins before dropping four straight games. More recently, the Warriors won twice in their past three games, including a 70-68 win over CSU San Bernardino. Last week CSUS defeated CSU East Bay before falling to UC San Diego, 81-72. …Senior forward Jordan Stokes leads his team in scoring with an average of 10.9 points per game. Chad Johnson, a senior point guard, averages 9.8 points per game, and Frank Monge, a 6-11 junior center, averages 8.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. …The Warriors are coached by former Cal State San Bernardino head coach Larry Reynolds, who is in his first season guiding CSUS.

Wood's Words
"Chico State has a winning mentality this year. They expect to win. (Terrence) Pellumn gives them an inside presence, and (Jay) Flores provides leadership at point guard. The entire team's defense has improved from recent years." … Coach Reynolds' players know how to play. They combine a number of offensive weapons with a stingy defense. He does a good job of managing the game, keeping it at his tempo."
