CARSON —
Zac Tiedeman claimed the battle of the point guards Friday, knocking down six 3-pointers in eight chances to lead Humboldt State to a 69-65 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Tiedeman finished with 22 points, none bigger than the two free throws he hit with 11 seconds remaining that finally sealed the victory. Fifteen seconds earlier, he dished his biggest assist of the evening, finding
Kyle Baxter open in the corner. Baxter hit his only 3-pointer of the night, putting the Jacks up 67-62 before Tim McGrath answered with one for the Toros.
Also scoring in double figures for HSU were
Brian Morris, with 13 points, and
Kevin Atkins, with 10 points to go along with his team-best eight rebounds. Both players had their court time limited by foul trouble, making Tiedeman's first half contributions even more important.
The victory improved Humboldt State to 13-5 overall and 10-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. CSU Dominguez Hills dropped to 8-10 overall and 8-5 in league, losing for only the second time in its last eight games.
"When we recruit players, we try to bring in ones who've played in winning programs. It's something in their heart that they've learned to do," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "They believe they can win, and you had two teams that possessed those characteristics tonight."
Battling head-to-head with CSUDH point guard Marquintise Davis, who led his team with a career-best 20 points, Tiedeman nailed five 3-pointers in six tries in the opening half. His biggest came from 30 feet out, giving the Jacks a 36-34 lead as the halftime buzzer sounded.
"Zac kept us in the game in the first half," Wood said. "He had some unbelievable bombs."
Also chipping in from long distance with timely 3-pointers was HSU's
Ernie Spada, who finished 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Humboldt State shot 55 percent from long range and CSUDH hit 46 percent of its 3-pointers, the squads posting identical 48 percent shooting overall from the field.
Tim McLaurin supplemented Davis' efforts with 17 points, hitting three of his six 3-point attempts. Michael Cox had nine points and a team-best six rebounds for the Toros.
Humboldt State tries to make it a sweep of the roadtrip Saturday when the Jacks face Cal State Los Angeles. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
