Suggs leads Jacks to first road win

LOS ANGELES – A Josh Suggs goal in the 54th minute proved to be the game winner as the Humboldt State men's soccer team defeated the Golden Eagles of Cal State Los Angeles 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The win, HSU's first on the road this season, improves the Jacks record to 3-8-3 overall, 3-7-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.  CSU Los Angeles falls to 7-5-1, 6-5-1 in CCAA action.

Humboldt State was out shot 5-to-3 in the first half and each team got just one shot on frame.  HSU's came off the foot of Scott Mariani in the fifth minute.  As neither side was able to score the teams went to halftime 0-0.

The Golden Eagles took the first shot of the second half, but the Jack's Zack Hammond got off the next two.  The second of which was saved, but not controlled by CSULA keeper Thaddeus Caraway. 

The rebound came out and Suggs jumped on it.  He shot and put it in the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season and 19th of his HSU career.  Hammond was credited with the assists, his second of the year.

Suggs in now tied with Lalo Serrano for seventh place on the Humboldt State career goal-scoring list.

Just over two minutes later the Jacks had another great chance to score.  At the 55:54 mark Suggs blasted a shot that could have give HSU a 2-0 lead, but it hit the post. 

The teams got off nine shots each in the second 45 minutes.  Kyle Verle, HSU's keeper, and Caraway made five and four saves respectively.  

Verle had a total of six saves in the match and earned the win.  It was his third clean sheet of the season and his record improves to 3-7-3.

Hammond led the HSU attack with four shots, two on goal and an assist.  Suggs had three shots, two on goal and a goal.
