Jacks battle to the finish, but fall in three

SAN FRANCISCO — Despite a dramatic effort in the third set, Humboldt State found little else to celebrate in a 25-13, 25-20, 29-27 loss to San Francisco State in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball action Friday.

Boxscore

The Lumberjacks fell to 1-22 overall and 1-18 in the CCAA with three matches remaining. San Francisco State improved to 13-11 overall and 10-9 in conference matches.

Humboldt State started slowly, hurting itself with three service errors in the opening set. Tied at 8-8, the Gators surged ahead behind two kills each from Sarah Lewis and Robyn Hall.

The Gators ran off 11 of the next 12 points to take a 19-9 lead, then ended the set with another Lewis kill and a Lumberjack attack error.

Effective hitting by SFSU produced another sizeable lead in the second set. Halimah Oswald contributed to the offense, allowing the Gators to build a 15-8 advantage.

Humboldt State challenged with kills by Toni Kroeker and Oceana Matsubu, pulling within 15-10. But Oswald and Lewis pounded down consecutive kills to rebuild the lead. The Lumberjacks refused to go down easy, holding off five match points before Megan Larmour's kill ended it, 25-20.

HSU let the Gators get ahead quickly in the final set, offering little resistance as SFSU built a 12-2 lead. But once again, HSU mounted a comeback, pulling within 22-18 on two kills by Channel Washington and Matsubu's service ace. After the Gators tacked on a point, the Jacks answered with five more, Brooke Ferguson's service ace and Washington's kill tying the set at 23-23.

The drama continued, the Gators forging a 25-24 lead before Manuel's kill and a block by Manuel and Allison Drobish gave the Jacks a 26-25 lead. Oswald and Hall put down kills to put the Gators back in front, but another block by Drobish tied it at 27-27

HSU helped the Gators out with a service error before Hall put away the set and match with another kill.

Offensively, Matsubu topped the Jacks with 7 kills, and Manuel added six without a hitting error. Ferguson paced the team with 10 digs, and Jo Arzadon contributed 23 assists.

San Francisco State was led by Lewis, with 15 kills, and Oswald, with 12. Sarah Kurfess had a team-high 23 digs, and Iris Tolenada finished with 40 assists.

Humboldt State travels to face Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday before finishing the season with home matches next weekend.
