Lumberjacks chase away Seawolves, 96-82

ARCATA — Five Lumberjacks scorched the nets, helping Humboldt State pull away to a 96-82 victory in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action Saturday.

Boxscore

Randy Hunter was 11-of-13 from the field, scoring 26 points, Brandon Sperling hit 7-of-10 on his way to 17 points, and Elliot Babcock-Krenk drained all five of his 3-point attempts as the Jacks improved to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA. Kyle Baxter scored 13 points and Brian Morris had 10 to supplement the sharp-shooters' efforts.

"Elliot shoots like that in practice, so it's no surprise to see him do it in a game," HSU head coach Steve Kinder said. "And Randy's that blue-chip athlete we brought in with high expectations. He's living up to those expectations on the court."

Morris and Hunter also tied for team-high rebounding honors with seven each. Sperling dished five assists without committing a turnover, and Scott Clark added four assists and eight points off the bench

Steven Pratt and Will Olsem each scored 14 points for Sonoma State, all of Olsem's coming in the second half. Sterling Arterberry scored 10 points and Ben Washington 12 points for the Seawolves, who dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in league games.

Humboldt State shot 57 percent from the field for the entire game, but was an incredible 69 percent in the second half.

Most of the first half was a nip-tuck battle, but Humboldt State finished the half strong, taking its largest lead of 11 points on a layup by Hunter with 1 minute, 35 seconds on the clock. Arterberry answered with a 3-pointer at the buzzer, trimming Humboldt State's lead to 44-36 at the break.

Sonoma State closed within six points on a couple of occasions in the second half, but the Lumberjacks powered to a 19-point lead on Babcock-Krenk's 3-pointer with 12:28 left to  play. The Seawolves were unable to get any closer than nine points the remainder of the game.
