Jacks' comeback comes up short in loss to CPP

ARCATA — Cal Poly Pomona withstood a furious Humboldt State rally to claim its eighth straight win, a 67-58 victory over the Lumberjacks on Thursday. The loss also ended the Jacks' winning streak at eight.

Boxscore

Trailing 53-39 with 8 minutes, 40 seconds remaining, the Lumberjacks scored 14 straight points to draw even with the Broncos on Zac Tiedeman's layup and free throw. But the Broncos took over from there, finishing the game with a 14-5 run of their own.

The victory allowed Cal Poly Pomona, 15-5 overall and 13-4 in league, to draw even with the Jacks in second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State San Bernardino took sole possession of first place with a 76-71 win over Sonoma State on Thursday.

Austin Swift scored 19 points to lead the Broncos, while Tobias Jahn and Dwayne Fells each contributed 11 points for CPP. Mitchell Rosser put up 10 points and shared the rebounding lead with two teammates at five each, helping the Broncos grab 26 rebounds to the Jacks' 13.

Also diminishing HSU's rebounding was the Broncos' shooting touch, a 67 percent effort from the field. Cal Poly Pomona shot a remarkable 77 percent in the second half in pulling out to the 14-point advantage following a 29-29 tie at the half.

Humboldt State was paced offensively by Brian Morris, who finished with 20 points and a team-best four rebounds. Tiedeman, the CCAA's leading 3-point shooter, scored 13 points, but hit only one long distance bomb and was limited to two attempts from beyond the arc by the Broncos' defense.

"We're a 3-point shooting team, and we only made four tonight," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "We didnt' get the opportunities we were looking for. That's a credit to (Cal Poly Pomona)."

Humboldt State takes its 16-6 overall record and 13-4 CCAA mark into Saturday's battle with CSU San Bernardino. The Jacks will honor their four seniors prior to the game, their final regular season home contest.

"We're in good shape," Wood said. "We've played a tough schedule, and we have a tough schedule ahead of us. It's a grind, but we'll regroup and take on Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday."
