ARCATA — Humboldt State's track and field athletes will be divided into separate groups this week, each contingent heading to a specific meet that will allow individuals to maximize their chances for solid marks.
One group of Lumberjacks will compete at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday and Friday, then head over to the Beach Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State, where they'll be joined by more teammates on Saturday. Another group will be in action at the Woody Wilson Classic hosted by UC Davis.
Meet Notes
The Beach Invitational will be held at the Cerritos College facility in Norwalk. The only events scheduled for Friday are the men's and women's hammer throws. A full slate of races and field events begins with the shot put at 9 a.m. Saturday. …UC Davis' Woody Wilson Classic will also feature the hammer competition on Friday and the remainder of the events on Saturday. Live results will be available during the competition at www.ucdavisaggies.com. …Nine Jacks have gained entry into the Mt. SAC Relays, an event with strict entry standards and top competition. The meet is being held for the 52nd year. …The open steeplechase races for men and women will be competed Thursday, as will the invitational 10,000 meter races. Friday and Saturday will feature multiple sections of races and field events.
Lumberjack Men's Notes
Still seeking the perfect race that will help produce quick qualifiers are HSU middle distance standouts Niko Arguelles, Nick LaPlant,
Luis Galacia and Eric Malain. Arguelles and LaPlant will chase a fast time in the 800 meters, while Galacia and Malain will both battle in the 1,500 meters at Mt. SAC. …
Austin Huff is scheduled to compete in his second 10,000 meters of the season after missing an NCAA provisional qualifier by a half second at the Stanford Invitational. He'll be joined in the late Thursday evening race by teammate Drew Sylvester… "Austin and Drew will be shooting for solid provisional marks that will give them a realistic chance to get into nationals," HSU head coach Sandy Moran said. "This will be a good opportunity to compete in a fast race that can pull them through." Huff's time of 30 minutes, .53 seconds is the fastest among all California Collegiate Athletic Association athletes thus far in the 2010 season. …Senior
Brad Wright is the Jacks' lone thrower competing at Mt. SAC. He'll compete in the men's hammer Friday, and will then head to the Beach Invitational to battle in the discus Saturday. …LaPlant and Arguelles are both scheduled to move up a notch Saturday into the 1,500 meters at the Beach Invitational. Senior
Megan Rolland looks to lower her own school record in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase Thursday, then test herself again in the 1,500 meters Friday. She already holds an automatic qualifying mark for nationals in the steeplechase, and provisional qualifiers in both the 1,500 and 5,000 meters. Her previous mark in the steeplechase has earned Rolland entry into the invitational section at Mt. SAC, a race that will feature some of the nation's best athletes, including last year's DII national champion, Mary Ballinger of Southern Indiana University. …Among CCAA athletes, Rolland ranks first in the steeplechase (10:35.82), first in the 1,500 meters (4:34.60), and second in the 5,00 meters (17:18.88). …Senior
Olivia Juarez, entered in the 100 meters, carries the Jacks' sprint hopes at Mt. SAC on Friday. She'll also race the 200 and possibly 400 meters at the Beach Invitational on Saturday. …
Heather Snyder will be competing in the shot put and discus at the Beach Invitational, hoping to improve on her already-impressive marks. Snyder leads all CCAA athletes in the shot put this spring with a best toss of 43 feet, 1.5 inches. She's third-best in the discus at 139-9. …Freshman
