ARCATA – Opening California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play, the Humboldt State women's soccer team took the field in Redwood Bowl on Friday afternoon against the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino and came up on the short end of a 2-0 result.
The win improves the Coyotes record to 3-0-0, 1-0-0 CCAA while HSU falls to 0-3-0, 0-1-0 in conference action.
On the day the Jacks were outshot 13-to-5, including 6-to-1 in shots on-goal.
CSUSB opened the scoring in the 38th minute when Amanda Villavicencio took a cross from Casey Hirsch and beat Jacks keeper Kelly Sandberg high to the near post.
At the 77:00 mark the Coyotes put the game away when Jenna Sanchez took a rebound off a corner kick and from the top of the six lifted the ball over Sandberg for a goal.
Sarah Nakamoto, who took two shots, and Arielle Kern who had three, including the side's lone shot on-goal, generated the HSU offense.
“We are playing well up until the final third of the field,” said HSU head coach Christian Johnson. “In the offensive zone we're not creating enough chances for ourselves. That has been the difference this year.”
Sandberg made four saves in the loss and is now 0-3-0 on the season. The Coyotes Tiffany Mallick made one save and earned her third win on the year.
HSU returns to the pitch on Sunday against Cal Poly Pomona. The match is scheduled to kick off at 11:30 a.m. in Redwood Bowl.
