ARCATA - A goal in the 39th minute was the difference as the Humboldt State women's soccer team lost 1-0 to the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) on Sunday in Redwood Bowl.
The loss drops the Jacks record to 0-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. CPP improves to 3-0-1, 1-0-1 in conference action.
The Broncos' Jennifer Rivera took a loose ball right in front of the net and banged it home low to the near post, beating HSU keeper Jennie Paugh at the 38:23 mark and giving CPP a 1-0 lead.
“Once again we gave up and soft goal,” head coach Christian Johnson said. “The keeper has to come off the line and close that play down.”
Up to that point the Jacks had been controlling the majority of play and had out shot the Broncos, 4-to-3. HSU would go on to out shoot CPP 8-to-4 in the half and 15-to-6 for the match, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Kim Carroll led the HSU attack with five shots. Sarah Nakamoto, Arielle Kern and Sawyer Gordon each a pair added.
“We played much better offensively today,” Johnson added. “We had our chances but just couldn't get one in. We out shot them, so I am happy about that, but someone has to step up and put the ball in the net.
“Arielle (Kern) and Kim (Carroll) were much more creative in the attack today and Sawyer (Gordon) had a good game as well.”
Paugh, 0-1-0, entered the game 18 seconds prior to the CPP goal, after Jacks starter Kelly Sandberg left with an injury. The Broncos Sarah Rohman made five saves and earned the win.
