ARCATA — In the paint, on the perimeter, or from the free throw line, it just didn't matter for
Brian Morris on Thursday. The senior put up a dominating effort from all over the court, scoring a school-record 50 points in Humboldt State's 94-66 win over Cal State Monterey Bay.
Morris' efforts helped the Jacks blow open the game in the second half, improving their record to 12-1 overall and 8-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State Monterey Bay dropped to 4-9 and 2-7 in league.
In a battle of the CCAA's top two scorers, Cal State Monterey Bay's Davion Berry, the league leader, came up well short despite contributing a team-high 26 points. No. 2 ranked Morris achieved his feat from all over the court, hitting 21-of-28 field goals, 3-of-5 3-pointers, and 5-of-6 free throws.
Morris' point total eclipsed Humboldt State's previous single-game scoring record of 46 points achieved by Austin Nichols in 2003. Morris also chipped in a team-high nine rebounds, falling just short of his fifth double-double of the season.
"It hasn't registered yet," Morris said, following the game. "I think that's because it happened in the flow of the game. My teammates did a great job of finding me down low, and after I made a few shots the rim started getting bigger."
Humboldt State held a 13-point lead at halftime, but the Otters came out determined to make a game of it. They drew within nine points on a pair of free throws by Berry with 14 minutes, 20 seconds remaining. Then Morris took over.
The 6-9 post from Portland, Ore. scored 12 of Humboldt State's next 14 points, punctuating the effort with consecutive 3-pointers that gave the Jacks a 70-51 lead. They continued to feed the post until Morris scored his 50th and final point of the evening on a layup and free throw.
"This was a special night in Lumberjack Arena," Humboldt State head coach
Steve Kinder said. "Fans got to seen a high level collegiate performance. Brian has always been a special player, but he put it all together tonight."
Supplementing Morris' efforts were teammates Randy Hunter, who scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and
Kyle Baxter, who scored 10 points with eight rebounds and six assists. As a team, HSU out-rebounded CSUMB, 42-25, and out-shot the Otters, 51 percent to 42 percent.
Besides Berry's 26 points and 10 rebounds, Cal State Monterey Bay benefited from Darroll Phillips' 14 points.
"There were many times tonight when we were trading baskets, and that happens against a good team like Cal State Monterey Bay," Kinder said. "Our goal was to get consecutive stops, and a few times we did. That allowed us to go on some runs."
Humboldt State will be back in Lumberjack Arena on Saturday to host San Francisco State at 7:30 p.m. San Francisco State defeated Sonoma State, 73-66 on Thursday.
