Jacks move into tie for 1st with win over UCSD

ARCATA — Humboldt State took care of business Saturday night, earning a sweep of the season series with a 69-44 win over UC San Diego. The victory improved the Jacks record to 16-2 overall and 12-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, and coupled with Cal State Dominguez Hills' loss to Cal State Stanislaus, moved HSU back into a tie for first in the league standings.

Randy Hunter and Scott Clark drained 3-pointers to fuel a 11-2 run midway through the second half that broke open the game. Kyle Baxter's free throws with 7 minutes, 7 seconds remaining extended the lead to 18 points, and the Tritons struggled to find answers to stop the surge.

Hunter finished with games highs of 17 points and eight rebounds, with teammate Brian Morris chipping in 13 points and seven boards. Clark came off the bench to score a season-best 10 pints, and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, including his 3-pointer.

Defensively, the Jacks shut down the Tritons all night, limiting them to a 29 percent shooting effort from the field. Casey Ryan, 2ith 12 points, and James McCann, with 10, both managed to break into double digits.

The Lumberjacks, meanwhile, scorched the net for a 53-percent mark, including Morris' 6-10 performance and Hunter's 6-11. Morris also dished four assists, tying Kyle Baxter for game-highs.

Humboldt State also dominated on the boards, out-rebounding the Tritons, 39-27. Morris, the tallest player on the floor, was equalled by HSU's DJ Broome, the smallest at 5-5, both grabbing seven rebounds.

UC San Diego took an early lead in the first half, moving ahead 8-4 for its largest advantage of the night on a layup by Brian Peters. The Tritons led by one point twice more in the period, but a steal by Hunter and assist from Brandon Sperling helped JD Esters scored a layup, proving the Jacks with a 27-22 lead at the break.

Humboldt State continues its homestand next week, hosting CSU Stanislaus at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Chico State at the same time Saturday.
