Men's Basketball

Home feast continues with 102-87 win over Clan

Box Score ARCATA – Running its home winning streak to 18 straight, the Humboldt State men's basketball team also remained unbeaten this season by claiming a 102-87 win over Simon Fraser in Lumberjack Arena Saturday.

Six Lumberjacks scored in double digits for the second straight game as the Jacks improved to 4-0 while dropping Simon Fraser to 3-2 overall. Senior Kyle Baxter led the way with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds, both career highs. The 6-9 senior also dished four assists in the one-sided contest.

"Even beyond his statistics, Kyle contributed so much to the game that doesn't show up in a box score," Humboldt State head coach Steve Kinder said. "Hitting double figures in rebounds for the first time in his career had become a team goal. We were all pulling for him."

Matt Lipski and Brandon Sperling each scored 19 points for the Lumberjacks, and Sperling contributed a career-high 10 assists while turning the ball over only twice. Randy Hunter and Scott Clark each scored 13 points for HSU, and Darren Turpin added 10.

Simon Fraser, of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, finished off a busy week that included two games in California last weekend, a trip home to British Columbia for Thursday's home game, then a quick journey back to the USA for Saturday's game in Arcata. Down for the count early against the Jacks, the Clan bounced back from a 29-point deficit in the second half to pull within 13 points in the game's closing minutes.

Sophomore guard Javari Williams carried his team during the comeback, finishing with a game-high 32 points. Daniel Deflorimonte was the only other Clan player in double figures, scoring 15 points.

Humboldt State jumped ahead 12-0 in the game's opening minutes behind a varied attack. Clark's three-pointer capped the run, forcing Simon Fraser to call a timeout only three and a half minutes into the contest.

The Lumberjacks continued their hot shooting throughout the half, and also ratcheted up the intensity with a fullcourt press on defense. Fueled by DJ Broome's four steals, Humboldt State forced the Clan into 12 first-half turnovers on the way to a game total of 22.

Up 60-33 at the break, the Jacks played the Clan even for the first 10 minutes of the second half, gaining their largest lead at 80-51 when Sperling lobbed a perfect pass that Baxter finished with an explosive dunk.

"Brandon (Sperling) played like this was a championship game," Kinder said. "He was the motor out there that kept us going."

Simon Fraser didn't simply sit back and take the pummeling for the rest of the game, however. Williams led his team on a 19-3 run that pulled the Clan within 13 points with 7 minutes, 32 seconds remaining. Humboldt State regained its balance, and kept the Clan on hold the rest of the way.

"There wasn't any give-up attitude in Simon Fraser, and they deserve a lot of credit for that," Kinder said. "They didn't fold. Every player on their team was still competing to the end."

Humboldt State opens the defense of its California Collegiate Athletic Association championship this week, going on the road to open league play. The Lumberjacks face Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday and take on Cal State East Bay on Saturday.
