Lumberjacks tie 2-2 in double overtime

Box Score ARCATA – Humboldt State and Cal State East Bay each scored two second-half goals in a double overtime 2-2 draw Sunday afternoon.

The tie puts the Lumberjacks at 1-2-2, 0-2-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action, and the Pioneers 2-3-1 overall, 1-2-1 in conference.

"We're pleased we got a point out of today and didn't lose," said head coach C.J. Johnson. "It took us a while to get going. We lacked the energy and excitement we had on Friday."

Both teams had just four shots in the first half, but could not put their chances away. Karen Pontoni just missed the goal with a header off a corner kick.

"Karen had a great game," said Johnson. "She played with a lot of energy, which is something we expect from our captain."

The Pioneers had a great scoring chance minutes after Pontoni's shot that just snuck past the far post, sending the teams scoreless into halftime.

The Jacks came out with more energy in the second half, scoring in the 50th minute to put them up 1-0. Lizzie Mitchell found Carly Kolpin's foot off a free kick just wide of the 18-yard box.

CSU East Bay responded with a few shots of their own, but Jennie Paugh and her defense kept them out of the net.

Chelsea LaRue got her first goal of the season in the 59th minute. Mitchell took the ball down toward the end line, passed it back to Kolpin who crossed it to LaRue for the goal.

The 2-0 lead didn't last long for Humboldt State when Breahna Berry lifted the ball over Paugh in the 65th minute. The Jacks let the ball bounce around in the box before it fell to Berry's feet.

Ariana Nobrega tied the game at 2-2 in the 76th minute off a long throw in from Sara Yamasaki.

"I certainly feel East Bay played with a lot of toughness and energy," said Johnson. "It's unfortunate we didn't attack more at the top of our six-yard box. We need to clean that up."

The 2-2 score took both teams into overtime where East Bay looked like they had sealed in the victory after three minutes, but the goal was called back due to a Pioneer committing a foul on a Lumberjack.

Liz Christensen had a chance to give the Jacks the win in the second overtime period, but her shot lifted just enough to hit the crossbar. LaRue was there for the rebound but hit it straight at CSUEB's goalkeeper Nina Cefalo.

"Something positive from the game is the 18 shots we were able to get," said Johnson. "Our play in the final third was lacking on Friday, but we were unfortunate to not put more away."

Terri Tigert had a shot in the last minute of play, but Cefalo smothered the ball, ending the game even at 2-2.

Humboldt State hits the road on its second road trip of the season, travelling to San Francisco State Friday before heading more south to Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday.
