Lumberjacks topple No. 10 ranked Broncos, 74-64

Box Score ARCATA — Assuming the role of the underdog for a change, Humboldt State men's basketball embraced the status in claiming a 74-64 win over No. 10 nationally ranked Cal Poly Pomona Thursday.

Ranked as high as No. 6 themselves earlier this year, the Lumberjacks fell out of the Top 25 following a pair of tough roadtrips. Led by seniors Kyle Baxter, Randy Hunter and Scott Clark, the Jacks reversed their fortunes Thursday, improving to 9-4 overall and 5-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Cal Poly Pomona, the conference leader coming into the evening's action, fell for only the second time to now stand at 9-2 overall and 6-2 in league. HSU's swarming defense forced 17 turnovers and combined with CPP's paltry 37 percent shooting effort from the free throw line as primary factors in the loss.

"Our seniors stepped up tonight. They played with confidence and were aggressive," Humboldt State head coach Steve Kinder said. "They did a nice job of attacking the basket, and they got to the foul line. I'm very proud of this group of players."

Baxter finished with 19 points and six rebounds, both team-highs, while Clark tied his HSU career best with 18 points. Hunter added 16 points, three blocked shots and three steals, and a fourth senior – D.J. Broome – dished five assists and came away with two steals.

Terrence Drisdom's 16 points on a 7-of-8 shooting performance led Cal Poly Pomona, with Mitchel Anderson contributing 11 and Tyquan Brown 10. None of the Broncos were effective from the free throw line, and as a team sank only seven of 19 attempts.

Clark and Baxter led an early assault that helped the Lumberjacks establish a 12-4 lead before Cal Poly Pomona responded 10-4 run to pull within two points at 16-14 on TDrisdom's layup. But HSU reclaimed the momentum as the clock ticked down toward the break, with Broome's layup finishing a 7-0 run that ended the first half with a 35-24 Jacks' lead.

The Broncos looked poised to make a comeback when they whittled the Jacks' lead to 36-31 after Matt Rosser's three-pointer and Brown's free throw with 16 minutes, 54 seconds still to be played. Hunter answered for the Jacks, scoring four straight points to help HSU establish a comfortable cushion again.

Humboldt State kept the lead in double digits for the final 13 minutes of the game, gaining its largest advantage at 16 points when Clark drove for a layup with 12:36 remaining. Brandon Sperling sealed the victory with a tip-in and resounding dunk in the final two minutes.

San Francisco State, a 81-69 loser to Sonoma State on Thursday, visits Lumberjack Arena on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
