Box Score ARCATA — Raw energy fueled a second half outburst, as Humboldt State summoned its might to rally from a one-point halftime deficit and claim a 87-70 men's basketball win over San Francisco State on Saturday.
After trailing 42-41 at the break, the Lumberjacks turned up the heat defensively while also shooting at a 57 percent clip in the second half to overpower the Gators. The victory improves HSU's record to 10-4 overall and 6-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while San Francisco State dropped to 4-11 in all games and is 2-7 in league.
"The halftime score wasn't to our liking, but I don't think we had any sense of panic," HSU head coach
Steve Kinder said, after watching his squad win its third straight game and sweep the weekend's pair of home games. "We've matured as a team. We don't have that uneasiness when we're not ahead by 10 at halftime."
Humboldt State's
Randy Hunter commanded the basket in the first half and controlled the boards in the second, finishing with game-highs of 22 points and nine rebounds. Teammate
Kyle Baxter scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half, also grabbing eight rebounds. The senior from Sacramento also dished four assists without committing a turnover.
"It was great to see Randy go out with great energy, great fire, and set the tempo for the rest of the team," Kinder said. "And Kyle is playing great basketball right now. He's adding so much to our game in a variety of ways."
Scoring 13 points for the Lumberjacks was another senior,
Brandon Sperling, who attacked the hoop relentlessly in the first half to keep the Jacks in striking range after they had fallen behind by six points. Freshman
Ethan Dillard contributed 11 points, draining three of the Jacks' six three-pointers.
San Francisco State was led by Nefi Perdomo's 16 points, 11 from Robbie Herndon and 10 points scored by James Albright. Griffin Reilly hit all three of his three-point attempts in the first half, but was shut down by the Jacks' defense in the second half and finished with nine points.
Less than a minute into the second half, Humboldt State took a 45-44 lead on Baxter's tip-in. San Francisco State led only one more time, going ahead 50-49 on Max Fodor's layup.
Leading by five points with 12 minutes, 27 seconds remaining to be played, the Lumberjacks went on a 8-0 run that included three-pointers by Dillard and
Austin Bryan. San Francisco State pulled with in nine when David Love hit a jumper three minutes later, but that was the only time the Gators were within single digits again.
Trailing on the boards 18-8 at one point in the first half, Humboldt State recovered nicely to finish with a 35-31 advantage in rebounds. The Lumberjacks also forced the Gators into 20 turnovers while committing only nine themselves.
Humboldt State begins a stretch of four straight road games Friday when it meets current CCAA leader Cal State San Bernardino. The Jacks face UC San Diego on Saturday.
