Box Score SAN BERNARDINO — Up by 11 points, down by eight, then up by 12 points again, Humboldt State finally emerged with a 65-61 win over league-leading Cal State San Bernardino in a men's basketball game that featured wide momentum swings.
It was the Jacks' second straight victory over the Coyotes on the CSUSB home court after losing on their first five trips to San Bernardino since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Lumberjacks improved to 11-4 overall and 7-4 in the CCAA, while Cal State San Bernardino is now 9-5 and 8-3 in league.
The victory was especially well-earned following a tough two days of travel. The Jacks' original flight to Los Angeles was canceled Thursday, and after several changes in plans, they caught a late flight to Sacramento, where they were forced to spend the night.
"We overcame a lot of adversity to earn this win," said HSU head coach
Steve Kinder. "We had to get up at 6 a.m. to catch a flight here, then drive two hours. We didn't have our usual video session or any normal game preparation. We came in raw and went away with a victory."
Austin Bryan scored 16 points, 10 of them during the Jacks' frantic second-half comeback, to lead HSU's offense.
Scott Clark and
Brandon Sperling each contributed 13 points, Clark also adding five steals for the Jacks, and
Randy Hunter corralled a team-high 11 rebounds.
Tre Brewer led all scorers with 18 points for CSUSB, and Theron Laudermill doubled up with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Kwame Alexander and D.J. Shumpert each grabbed 11 rebounds for the Coyotes, who finished with a 56-35 advantage on the boards.
HSU surrendered an 18-7 first-half lead when Cal State San Bernardino scored 15 points in a run that carried over from the first half into the second. Humboldt State answered with its own surge, scoring 18 straight points to gain a 48-38 lead when Bryan exploded for 10 straight points on back-to-back three-pointers and four free throws.
"We all knew they'd make a run at home," said HSU guard
D.J. Broome, who contributed five rebounds and two steals. "We stuck with it, and responded with a run of our own.".
Cal State San Bernardino kept in the hunt with three consecutive three-pointers, making the score 59-52 with just over a minute to play. Leading 62-56, the Jacks were unable to check the Coyotes' comeback, with Hakeem Washington's free throw and and Shumpert's jumper making it a three-point game with under 50 seconds remaining.
The Coyotes quickly regained possession, but Broome rebounded a missed shot and hit two of four free throws in the fina 35 secondsl, and Sperling added one to hold off CSUSB.
"We knocked down just enough free throws to keep the lead," Broome said. As a senior, I need to respond to that pressure. You just try to take your time and knock it down." It was good to get here today. We napped, we ate, and came away with a win."
Clark led the Jacks' early charge to the front, hitting a three-pointer, two free throws and a driving layup during a seven-point solo surge. Bryan's three-pointer gave HSU its largest lead of the first half at 18-7 with 11:11 remaining until the break.
Brewer brought the Coyotes right back, draining a three-pointer with 2:30 left on the clock, and Alexander scored an acrobatic jumper to even the score at 27-27. Missed opportunities on both ends of the court sent the teams into the half with that same count.
Tough defense by the Coyotes kept the Jacks off the mark, holding HSU to only two field goals in the first six minutes of the second half. Laudermill's bucket gave the Coyotes their largest lead at 38-30 before Hunter crafted a three-point play with a layup and free throw.
Clark's efforts again brought the Jacks right back, his drive into the paint cutting the advantage to 38-35. After forcing a turnover, Bryan launched a successful three-pointer that pulled the teams even again and after he made two free throws following a technical foul on the Coyotes, the Jacks didn't trail again.
Humboldt State's roadtrip continues Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. game in La Jolla against UC San Diego. The UCSD Tritons slipped past Sonoma State, 63-62 on Friday.
