Men's Basketball

Wildcats emerge with another tight win over HSU

Box Score CHICO — Appropriate for a rivalry that began in 1934 and has included 179 match-ups, Saturday's men's basketball game between Humboldt State and Chico State wasn't decided until the final minute of play. But after a decade of dominance by the Lumberjacks, Chico State offered a strong reminder of the two programs' competitive history, sweeping the season's two-game series with a 67-61 victory over the Jacks on Saturday.

Jay Flores' 30-foot three-pointer with 40 seconds remaining finally gave the Wildcats an advantage they wouldn't surrender, moving the home team up, 65-61. That lead marked the first time either squad had led by more than two points during the last 10 minutes of the contest.

Flores was one of three Wildcats scoring in double figures, putting up 12 points while teammates Sean Park and Amir Carraway each added 14. For the second straight night, Austin Bryan came off the bench to lead the Jacks, scoring 15 points.

Randy Hunter contributed 13 points despite playing only 21 minutes because of foul trouble. Kyle Baxter scored 12 and Scott Clark 10 for HSU.

The loss ended Humboldt State's six-game winning streak, dropping the Jacks to 13-5 on the season and 9-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Chico State improved to 15-5 and 9-5, moving into a tie with the Lumberjacks for second place in the CCAA.

Hunter was the Jacks' primary weapon in the game's early stages, scoring seven of HSU's first 11 points. But with the game dead even, the Jacks' senior was sent to the bench after picking up his second foul of the contest with 10 minutes, 58 seconds left until halftime.

Chico State extended its lead to three points when Carraway hit two free throws to start a 9-0 run that suddenly provided the Wildcats with a 21-13 lead. Free throws made the difference, Chico State connecting on 10 of its 13 attempts while the Jacks made two of six.

Bryan kept the game from getting away from the Jacks early, nailing three-pointers on consecutive trips down the court that cut the Wildcats' lead to 26-23. Carraway answered with a long aerial, and Sims penetrated for two more points, once again extending Chico State's lead to eight.

For the third time in five tries, and on his third straight attempt, Bryan fired home another three-pointer. This time, Carraway couldn't respond for the Wildcats, sending the teams to halftime with Chico State leading, 31-26.

At the beginning of the second half, the Lumberjacks traded two point buckets for Chico State's threes, allowing the hosts to extend their lead to nine points. More bad news arrived when Hunter picked up his third foul just over three minutes into the period, forcing him to sit again.

HSU trimmed the lead to three points when Brandon Sperling drove for a layup, but a free throw by former Arcata High player Jordan Semple and three-pointer from Sims opened the gap again. Semple contributed only two points before fouling out late in the contest.

Charging back quickly, the Jacks erupted for an 9-1 run, tying the game on Baxter's driving layup and edging ahead, 49-48 when Sperling hit a free throw. The teams traded the lead for the next 10-plus minutes, neither leading by more than two points and setting up the dramatic finish.

Lumberjack Arena will be a welcome sight for Humboldt State this week after playing four straight road games and seven of its last nine away from home. The Jacks take on Cal Poly Pomona at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and San Francisco State at the same time Saturday.
