Eagles send Lumberjacks to second straight loss

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Trailing by a point at halftime, the Cal State Los Angeles men's basketball team took control in the second period, sending Humboldt State to its second straight road loss with a 68-48 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory Friday.

Suffering its third loss in the last four games, Humblodt State dropped to 7-4 overall and 3-4 in conference. Cal State Los Angeles improved its record to 9-2 and 5-2 in the CCAA.

Contributing to the Lumberjacks' demise was a paltry 24 percent shooting effort from the field. The Lumberjacks also made only 17 percent of their chances from three-point range, while the Eagles were 45 percent from the field and 30 percent from long range.

Cal State Los Angeles was led by Chris Robinson's 18 points and 16 from Ryan Wetherell. Carl Hoffman added 13 points and Leland Jones grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Randy Hunter was the only HSU player to reach double figures, putting 10 points on the board for the Jacks. Scott Clark contributed nine and Brandon Sperling eight. That trio and the rest of the Jacks have to quickly regroup in time for Saturday's CCAA game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

"We had some toughness tonight, but that wasn't reflected in the score," HSU head coach Steve Kinder said. "We have less than 24 hours to find that toughness again, and we need to define our roles more quickly. That's what will allow us to be successful."

On Friday, Matt Lipski's layin gave Humboldt State a 12-9 lead five minutes into the game, but the Golden Eagles scored the next seven points to gain a four-point lead. Jordan Richards' resounding dunk off the inbounds lob from Bussey Ellis finished the surge.

After the Jacks pulled within two again, Richards offered an encore when he threw down another dunk, this time taking the lob pass from Robinson. On the next CSULA possession, Richards made it three for three with a slam off a pass from Wetherell, giving the Eagles a six-point advantage at 21-15.

HSU battled back from the free throw line, cutting the lead to 23-22 on two by D.J. Broome and a layup and foul shot by Hunter. Cal State LA turned the ball over, and Lipski converted a 19-foot jumper to put the Jacks ahead with 3:13 remaining in the first half.

Hoffman's putback pulled the Eagles within a single digit, but that score was the last of the first period, sending the teams into halftime with Humboldt State ahead, 26-25.

Cal State Los Angeles quickly reclaimed the momentum in the second half with a 12-2 run keyed by two Wetherell three-pointers. Taking advantage of the Jacks' shooting problems, the Eagles moved up by nine, 39-30, on Wetherell's jumper.

Looking for a quick comeback, the Jacks fired up and missed a pair of three-pointers, and the Eagles extended the lead to double digits on a pair of Robinson free throws. Brandon Sperling connected on a three for HSU, but a layup by Watkins gave CSULA a 45-35 lead midway through the second half.

Clark's jumper with 8:36 left to play brought the Jacks back within six, as close as they would get the rest of the way. CSULA's lead expanded to 11 points, but the Jacks found hope when Kyle Baxter's jumper cut the lead to eight. That optimism was fleeting however, falling by the wayside when Robinson fired in an off-balance three-pointer.

In the game's final minutes, Humboldt State's desperation fueled a Eagles' 10-0 run that put the Jacks away. The Lumberjacks missed all but one opportunity from the field in the final 4:36.

At times tonight it felt hopeless, offensively," Kinder said. "Thats to Cal State L.A.'s  credit.  They have been holding teams down all year, and we knew coming in it would be a low-scoring game."
