Jacks exact sweet revenge on Golden Eagles

Box Score ARCATA — Looking in the California Collegiate Athletic Association mirror, Cal State L.A. saw everything on the opposite side of what it was back on Jan. 7 when the Golden Eagles defeated Humboldt State by 20 points in Los Angeles. This time, it was the Lumberjacks who pulled away in the second half to avenge that loss with a 74-55 win over CSLA on Saturday.

"We're a whole different team than we were when we lost down there," said HSU's Scott Clark, one of four Lumberjacks scoring in double figures. "Teams can't focus on just one guy. They have to guard all five of us on the court."

Humboldt State maintained its position in the CCAA, sharing first place with Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona, all with 13-5 league records. The Jacks, now 17-5 overall, will face off against Cal Poly Pomona on the road next Saturday after taking on San Francisco State on Thursday.

Randy Hunter's jumper and two layups by Clark started the Jacks on a 9-2 run that quickly expanded a four-point halftime advantage to 11 points in the opening minutes of the second half. Cal State L.A. made it's own run, cutting the Jacks' lead to five at 47-42 on Leland Jones' jumper with 11 minutes, 53 seconds remaining. That's when Austin Bryan drained a three to refuel the Lumberjacks, who pulled ahead by 18 points during a six-minute surge.

"We're finding our rhythm, swinging the ball around and getting everybody touches," said Hunter, who put Humboldt State ahead, 21-20 with a power slam right after the Eagles had taken their final lead of the game on Quinton Watkins' three-pointer. "The revenge factor definitely kicked in for this game."

Senior guard Brandon Sperling finished with 16 points to claim team-high scoring honors just ahead of Clark's 14 points. Hunter scored 13 points while leading the Jacks in rebounding with eight, and Kyle Baxter put 12 points on the scoreboard while also dishing three assists.

Crucial to the Jacks' offense was their ability to get to the free throw line, where they connected on 30 of 36 attempts. Sperling and Clark each converted seven free throws in eight chances.

Defense was also critical to the Jacks' success, senior guard D.J. Broome sparking the effort with five steals to match his five assists for team-highs in both categories. HSU forced the Eagles into 17 turnovers and held them to 36 percent shooting.

"We kept them off balance by applying ball pressure," HSU head coach Steve Kinder said. "We did a nice job of taking away their space. The real key to the game was matching them physically."

Chris Robinson was the only Cal State L.A. player to scoring in double figures, finishing with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Marc Wilson finished with nine points, and Jordan Richards contributed three of the team's total of seven blocked shots.

The Golden Eagles fell to 14-8 overall and are now 10-8 in the CCAA.
