Dismal perimeter game sends Jacks to upset loss

Box Score ARCATA — Downtown was a quiet, vacant place for Humboldt State on Thursday, a location where nothing was happening. In fact, the Jacks' 1-of-17 performance from three-point range was enough to allow San Francisco State to claim a 82-75 overtime win over Humboldt State.

The loss, combined with Cal Poly Pomona's loss to Sonoma State, left Chico State alone in first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Wildcats – now leading the CCAA by a half game – will play Friday and Saturday games, while the Jacks and Broncos will next play on Saturday.

Humboldt State held the advantage in nearly every statistical category Thursday, out-rebounding the Gators and forcing them into 20 turnovers while committing only nine themselves. The Jacks hit 28 free throws to only 17 by SFSU.

Free throws actually accounted for the Gators' final six points, including four straight by high-scorer Nefi Perdomo with only one second remaining. Perdomo finished with 30 points, shooting nine for 13 from the floor and 11 of 11 from the free throw line.

Scott Clark was the Lumberjacks' leading scorer with 19 points, while Randy Hunter put up a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds. Brandon Sperling scored 14 points and Matt Lipski added 13 off the bench.

Rebounding helped the Jacks build an early lead with successful second chance opportunities. Hunter, Kyle Baxter and Sperling all scored put-backs as the Jacks jumped out to a 10-2 lead.

The Gators charged back, David Love converting a Lumberjacks turnover into a three-pointer. Tyler Brown's layup brought the Gators within two at 12-10.

HSU stretched the lead to six on a couple of occasions before halftime, but the Gators didn't provide any room for comfort.  Casey James and Griffin Reilly brought the Gators back from one six-point deficit, both dropping in three-pointers down the stretch.

As the clock wound down, Perdomo drove the court and scored an acrobatic layup while drawing a foul, and his free throw put the Gators on top for the first time since they scored the game's first basket, sending them to the break up 37-36.

HSU's 21-13 rebounding edge helped the Jacks battle through first-half shooting problems from three-point range. Humboldt State missed its first nine long-range aerials while the Gators were four of seven from beyond the arc.

Early in the second half the teams battled on even terms, neither able to grab more than a three-point lead in the first 10 minutes. James Albright finally broke that trend, ripping a three-pointer that gave SFSU a 60-54 lead midway through the second half.

Horrendous shooting kept the Jacks from closing the gap. Three more three-point attempts missed the mark, and even the free throws stopped falling. That combination allowed San Francisco State to maintain its advantage at 69-63 with under five minutes remaining.

A pair of free throws by Sperling and another put-back by Hunter tied the game, but the next trip down the court saw Hunter's layup roll out, and Perdomo took advantage of the possession with a three-pointer that gave SFSU a 72-69 lead. Clark picked the perfect time to connect on the Jacks' first and only three-pointer, tying the game with 50 seconds to play.

Humboldt State's defense held, and a rebound by Hunter gave the Jacks a chance to win in regulation. Baxter drove the lane, but was called for a charge, giving the Gators a chance of their own. But Perdomo's halfcourt shot failed, sending the game to overtime.

On Saturday the Lumberjacks play their final road game of the regular season, traveling to face Cal Poly Pomona. Scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tip-off, the game can be heard on KATA 1340 AM radio or through the Lumberjacks web site at hsujacks.com.
