Box Score POMONA — Five minutes into the second half of Saturday's basketball game, Humboldt State was still looking for the bottom of the net and its first points of the period. Fifteen minutes later, the painful display of shooting mercifully ended in the Lumberjacks' 64-47 loss to Cal Poly Pomona.
Cal Poly Pomona held Humboldt State to its lowest point total of the season, gaining a double-digit lead early in the second period that proved insurmountable. Mitchel Anderson paced the Broncos' offensive attack, scoring a game-high 21 points to help his team improve to 17-6 overall and 14-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Humboldt State's record dropped to 17-7 in all games and 13-7 in conference contests. HSU's only double-figures scorer was
Scott Clark with 16 points. In one stretch, Clark tried to carry his team back into contention, scoring eight straight points to pull the Jacks within 12. But even his four-for-four shooting from three-point range couldn't dent the Broncos' advantage.
As was the case in Thursday's loss to San Francisco State, woeful offense led to the Jacks' demise. They finished the game only 14 for 42 from the field for an embarrassing 33 percent shooting effort. They also turned the ball over 15 times.
In the first half Saturday, Cal Poly Pomona caught its stride early, claiming a 13-8 lead on Anderson's three-pointer with 12:29 on the clock. The Broncos' lead grew to eight points on DeRonn Scott's layup, while the Jacks continued their long distance winter with five consecutive misses from three-point range.
Even when HSU went inside the basket remained sealed shut, illustrated by
Kyle Baxter's dunk attempt that bounced off the rim. The Jacks combined shooting from the field was only 28 percent in the first half.
Cal Poly Pomona took advantage of HSU's absent offense, pushing the lead to 10 points at 29-19. Humboldt State drew within seven points, but missed two opportunities in the final minute, sending the teams to halftime with CPP leading 31-24.
As the 2011-12 regular season approaches it conclusion, the pack at the top of the CCAA is slowly dissolving. Two weeks ago five teams were tied for first place, and this weekend's games began with three schools still sharing the lead.
Humboldt State was one of the three before falling twice on its final roadtrip, leaving Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona tied for first heading into the final weekend of CCAA play.
Two home games will finish Humboldt State's regular season, the first scheduled for Wednesday against UC San Diego and the second set for Friday against Cal State San Bernardino. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
