Box Score ARCATA – All five seniors stepped up to share the spotlight Friday in Humboldt State's 72-66 men's basketball win over Cal State San Bernardino, sweeping the Lumberjacks into the California Collegiate Athletic Association postseason on the week's wave of success.
Friday's victory, along with Wednesday's win over UC San Diego, earned the Jacks the No. 3 seed in the CCAA Championships Tournament and a first round home game. They'll take on Cal State Los Angeles at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday as the second half of a doubleheader that begins with the HSU women's team matching up with Chico State.
Another classic contest between Humboldt State and Cal State San Bernardino in front of a sellout crowd of 1,850 fans wasn't decided until the final minute. With 56 seconds remaining,
Scott Clark, one of the five senior starters, hit a pair of free throws to put the Jacks up, 68-66.
The Coyotes moved the ball right down the floor, feeding big man Kwame Alexander. But the CSUSB junior had his pocket picked by 5-foot, 5-inch senior
D.J. Broome, and when the Coyotes were forced to foul, Clark hit another two free throws to put the Jacks up by four with 22 seconds remaining.
Cal State San Bernardino pushed the ball downcourt quickly again, but coming up with the huge defensive rebound on a missed three-pointer was yet another HSU senior,
Brandon Sperling. Another upperclassman,
Randy Hunter, finished the game off with two more free throws to account for the final margin of victory.
"We were expecting a dogfight, and that's what we got," Clark said. "We made the plays down the stretch when we had to, and that's why we won."
The game's statistics also illustrated the seniors' balanced effort. Clark finished at the game's high scorer with 19 points, while
Kyle Baxter topped the team in rebounding with eight. Hunter scored 16 points, and Sperling 14, while Broome added team highs in both assists, with five, and steals, with three.
HSU finished the regular season with a 18-7 overall record and 15-7 conference mark, tying Cal Poly Pomona for second place behind Chico State. Cal State San Bernardino dropped to 14-11 in all games and 13-9 in league, and enters the CCAA postseason as the No. 5 seeded team.
Tre Brewer led the Coyotes in scoring with 19 points, and also came away with a game-high five steals. Alexander finished with 13 points, but cooled down after scoring 10 of his team's first 12 points of the contest. Phil Holmes added 12 points off the bench and Theron Laudermill contributed 10.
Humboldt State jumped ahead quickly, building a 13-2 lead when Sperling threw down a dunk and Clark made a layup. But the Coyotes responded, coming back to tie the game at 28-28 on Nate Roth's layup with 2:32 remaining until halftime.
Austin Bryan drained a three-pointer and Broome hit a free throw to give the Jacks a 32-28 advantage at the break.
"This game was a reflection of the season, with many ups and downs," HSU head coach
Steve Kinder said. "But the fans, the community and the university gave us what amounts to a 10-point lead before the game even tipped off."
Winners of Tuesday's tournament games, all played at the sites of the top four seeds, will advance to Friday's semifinals at UC San Diego. The semifinal winners will vie for the tourney title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II West Region Championships in La Jolla on Saturday.
