Box Score ARCATA — Suffering through a 1-9 slump from three-point range in recent games,
Ethan Dillard did exactly what he should. The Humboldt State freshman just kept on shooting.
That strategy paid off big-time Saturday in lifting the Lumberjacks to a 93-73 blowout of visiting CSU Monterey Bay. Dillard converted six of nine chances from three-point range, scoring a career-high 20 points to lead five HSU players in double-digits.
"My teammates were making great passes, finding me open," Dillard said. "It's a great confidence booster when the first couple of shots fall."
The victory maintained Humboldt State's status as one of four teams leading the CCAA with 11-5 league records. HSU currently shares first place with Chico State, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino, all winners Saturday. The Jacks are now 15-5 overall.
Cal State Monterey Bay lost it's 14th consecutive game, falling to 2-17 overall and 1-14 in the CCAA.
Coming off the bench early because of starter
D.J. Broome's foul trouble, Dillard connected on his first long bomb with 8 minutes, 12 second remaining in the first half. The Jacks' next trip downcourt was a deja' vu experience, with another rocket filling the net. By halftime, Dillard has already surpassed his previous season and career-high of 12 points, scoring 14 to help HSU take a 50-30 lead to the lockerroom.
"We shoot the ball well at home," HSU head coach
Steve Kinder said. "The bottom line is the crowd gives us energy. That's tough to find on the road."
Cal State Monterey Bay briefly answered the challenge in the second half, pulling within 10 points when James Thomas hit a three-pointer with 15:28 still to play.
Matt Lipski's post play helped the Jacks quickly respond, expanding the lead to 23 points midway through the period.
Humboldt State's reserves traded baskets with the Otters for the final 10 minutes, keeping the cushion at 18 points or more throughout.
Supplementing Dillard's output were teammates
Austin Bryan, with 13 points and
Scott Clark with 12.
Kyle Baxter and
Darren Turpin each put 10 points on the scoreboard for HSU.
Brandon Ward paced CSU Monterey Bay with 21 points, with Kevin Loustale and Derrick Anderson each adding 11. The Otters struggled through a 40 percent team shooting effort compared to HSU's 54 percent, and were out-rebounded, 37-29 by the Lumberjacks.
Humboldt State remains home for two more games this week, taking on Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday and Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday. Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
