Seawolves sink Lumberjacks in final minutes

Box Score ARCATA — It took 36 minutes, but Sonoma State found its long-range touch just in time to steal a 62-58 win over Humboldt State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball game Saturday.

Will Olsem and Patrick Scott knocked down consecutive 3-pointers to give Sonoma State the lead with just inside four minutes remaining. Prior to their late heroics, the Seawolves had connected from beyond the arc only once in 13 tries, but the timely buckets forged a 6-point lead that HSU couldn't overcome.

The victory improves Sonoma State to 6-8 overall and 4-6 in the CCAA. Humboldt State had hoped to tack on a second straight home win following Thursday's defeat of San Francisco State, but instead fell to 6-8 overall and 2-8 in league.

After building an 11-point lead midway through the second period, Humboldt State scored only two points during a six-minute stretch, allowing Sonoma State to tie the game at 50-50 on Jason Walter's layup with 4 minutes, 28 seconds remaining. Olsem and Scott followed up with their long aerials to complete a 17-2 run.

Scott topped the Seawolves in scoring, putting up 17 points despite a 4-for-17 shooting performance. Walter contributed a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds, and Olsem scored 12 points for SSU.

Also aiding Sonoma State's efforts was a marked disparity at the foul line, the Seawolves hitting 23 of 31 attempts while the Jacks finished with only 8 free throws in14 attempts. Eight of Scott's points came on free throws, and Olsem was a perfect 6-of-6 from the line.

"One of our goals in every game is to make more free throws than our opponent attempts," Humboldt State head coach Steve Kinder said. "Sonoma State did a good job of getting to the line tonight and we didn't."

Rakim Brown was the only Lumberjack to hit double figures, knocking down 16 points. Austin Bryan and Darren Turpin each scored nine.

Both teams started cold, with the Seawolves leading 6-4 five minutes into the game. HSU was first to find its shooting touch, gaining a 9-point lead when Brown scored a layup with just over a minute remaining until halftime.

Holding a 31-23 advantage as the second half began, the Lumberjacks allowed the Seawolves to pull within four points before scoring HSU answered. The Jacks stretched the lead to seven again on a jumper by Brown, and Brandon Woods' layup kept the margin intact.

"We didn't come out strong enough at the start of the second half," Brown said. "When we build a lead, we can't stop playing hard."

Humboldt State's press helpled the Jacks move up by 11, frustrating the Seawolves, who committed 22 turnovers in the game. The Lumberjacks had given the ball away only 10 times until the final seven minutes, but turned it over seven times from that point on to aid the Sonoma State comeback.

The Jacks go on the road for more CCAA games this week, traveling to Southern California to face Cal State Los Angeles on Friday and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.
