Lumberjacks can't overcome CSUSB rally

Box Score ARCATA — For nearly 37 minutes, Humboldt State maintained control of a tight battle against visiting Cal State San Bernardino. But the Coyotes owned the final 3 minutes and 36 seconds to steal a 70-65 win over the Lumberjacks in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball match-up Thursday.

Continuing their slow start in league play, the Jacks fell to 1-4 in the CCAA and are now 5-4 overall. Cal State San Bernardino kept pace with Cal Poly Pomona to share the early lead in the CCAA with a 5-0 record, and is now 7-1 on the season.

Cal State San Bernardino outscored HSU 10-2 in the final stretch, the Coyotes' efforts aided by three Lumberjack turnovers. That brought them back from a 9-point deficit after the Jacks had forged a 59-50 lead with 9:10 remaining on the clock.

"(CSU) San Bernardino exposed our weaknesses," HSU head coach Steve Kinder said. "We were back on our heels, making poor passes against an experienced opponent, and because of that we suffered."

The loss also clouded over strong individual performances by Humboldt State's Deaundray Robinson and Austin Bryan. Robinson achieved his first double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds. Bryan held the Jacks' hottest shooting hand, sinking three 3-pointers on his way to a season-best 21 points that led all scorers Thursday. Also finishing in double figures was Alec Williams with 12 points, while Cody Kale dished a season-best seven assists.

"I'm pleased with some of the individual efforts tonight," Kinder said. "Deaundray was amazing. That's the kind of play that needs to be contagious and spread to other players."

Brian Goins paced the Coyotes with 17 points, including a clutch 3-pointer that put CSUSB ahead, 65-63, with 1:26 remaining. Kwame Alexander scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, while Joshua Gouch added 10 points to the ledger.

As typical in the fierce battles between the league rivals, Thursday's game forecast an exciting finish from the outset. Robinson and Bryan got the Jacks started quickly, and newcomer Rocky Brown, playing his first game for the Jacks, drained a 3-pointer that gave HSU a 19-10 lead.

It only took two minutes for the Coyotes to recover, Gouch's layup starting a 12-0 run that moved his team ahead, 22-19 with 7:06 left in the first half. Brown hit another 3-pointer before Goins dropped in a jumper that left Humboldt State on top, 31-30, at halftime.

The teams were tied four times during the first five minutes of the second half before Kale and Williams hit consecutive 3-pointers, and Robinson scored in the paint during an 8-0 HSU run. Again, the Coyotes responded, another Goins' 3-pointer and a resounding dunk by Alexander helping them claw back into contention.

Humboldt State will get another chance to get back on track Saturday when the Lumberjacks host UC San Diego in another CCAA contest. The Tritons are 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the CCAA after dropping a heartbreaking 52-51 loss to unbeaten Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday.
