Lumberjacks drop round two to Cal Poly Pomona

Box Score ARCATA — It was only a week ago when the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos and Humboldt State Lumberjacks faced off for the first time this season, exchanging equal blows before the Broncos edged ahead for a double overtime victory. Seven days later – on the Jacks' home court this time – the battle was equally tight, again going down to the wire.

Unfortunately for Humboldt State, the result was also the same. Cal Poly Pomona delivered the timely blows in the game's waning minutes, escaping with a 65-61 victory over the Lumberjacks on Saturday.

Cal Poly Pomona improved its record to 5-3 overall and is now 3-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings. Humboldt State fell to 5-5 in all games and remains winless in conference at 0-4.

"You had two power programs throwing punches," HSU head coach Steve Kinder said. "We've had four exciting endings now, with regulation and both overtimes last week and the finish tonight. It's classic college basketball. They made one or two plays down the stretch that made the difference."

The fourth thrilling finish began to take shape when the Broncos suddenly found their 3-point touch with 8 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the game. DeRonn Scott drained the first, cutting in half the Jacks' six-point advantage. The teams exchanged baskets before Jordan Finn tied the game at 52-52 with a 3-pointer, and the Broncos recaptured the lead they held earlier in the half when Barry Bell drained a long bomb with 5:05 left to play.

Humboldt State held on, pulling within one point four different times. Layups by Allan Guei and Will Taylor accounted for two of the occasions, and four free throws from David Howard twice brought the Jacks within a single digit. Two free throws by Finn with five seconds remaining finally sealed the Broncos' win.

Jordan Mackie led the Jacks in scoring with 13 points, bouncing back from a rough first-half shooting effort with 11 in the second half. Guei scored 11 points and Brandon Pomrehn contributed 10, but HSU's top scorer on the season, David Howard, showed the effects of a recent bout with the flu by putting up only eight points Saturday.

"Dave is recovering, but every team is going through the same thing with illnesses right now," Kinder said. "More important, Cal Poly did a nice job defending him tonight. We also did a nice job defending their top guy (Scott), who is a double-double machine."

Scott finished the night with six points, 11 points fewer than his 17.3 per game average. The 6-foot, 6-inch senior hit only one of nine shots from the field, but helped his team out with six assists and seven rebounds.

Scoring in double figures for the Broncos were Finn, with 14 points, and Quentin Taylor and Jordan Faison, both of whom added 12. Chad Haysbert grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for CPP, helping the Broncos claim a 37-28 edge on the boards.

As part of the NCAA's "Life in Balance" initiative, the Lumberjacks will be on break for nine days before returning to Arcata to resume practice on Dec. 30. Their next scheduled game is a January 3 CCAA match-up with Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside.
