Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – For the second time this season,
Lizzie Mitchell provided all the offense Humboldt State women's soccer would need in shutting out an opponent.
As was the case last Monday, Mitchell netted the Lumberjacks' lone score and the defense held strong in the second 1-0 shutout in six days by taking care of the San Francisco State Gators in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Sunday afternoon.
The Jacks' win is the program's first CCAA win since defeating Chico State at home, 2-1, last Sept. 23. HSU improves to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the league, while the Gators fall to 1-2-1 and 0-2 in the CCAA.
The HSU defense under first-year head coach
Paul Karver's direction has now allowed only six goals in four matches with two shutouts.
"The girls were committed to the game plan and we were able to make a few tactical moves that really helped in the second half," noted Karver. "San Francisco State posed a number of problems for us because they are a very organized group defensively."
In her first action in goal of the year,
Amber Woolcock turned away six San Francisco State shots, while facing 15 shots overall.
The HSU offense registered 13 shots for the 90 minutes with six being on goal.
The third-year Mitchell seems to have a knack for important goals this past week.
In only six seconds after a
Colette Behen shot went wide left, Mitchell put in what would be the game-winner at 75:05 on a free kick from outside the box.
The game was not decided completely until the final horn sounded. Woolcock had to stop her sixth shot as time expired to seal the victory.
"We will enjoy this win, but we will begin preparing for a difficult weekend coming up as soon as we set foot on the bus," finished Karver.
HSU attempted just four first half shots, but narrowly missed converting on three of them.
Elle Reid hit a ball wide left in the opening 14 seconds and saw her header bounce off the crossbar 6:33 into the half. Behen had the other shot at 38:51, which was saved by the Gators' keeper.
Woolcock was tested early in the latter stanza. The junior turned away a home boot 7:45 into play.
Behen and
Ariel Diehl saw their kicks saved in the following minutes.
Mitchell had her first shot on goal (63:12) turned away before she converted 12 minutes later.
HSU opens the home portion of its schedule for the first time this week with a pair of home bouts next weekend with a 12:30 p.m. match against Cal State East Bay on Friday afternoon. It entertains Cal State Stanislaus in an 11:30 a.m. affair next Sunday.
