Guei and Jacks oust Toros with hot start

Box Score CARSON – Everyone always feels more comfortable at home and Humboldt State's Allan Guei is no different.
 
Returning to the Torodome where his house is a two-minute walk from the arena's doors, Guei led the Lumberjacks to their best performance of the men's basketball season.
 
The junior scored the game's opening bucket 44 seconds into the contest, netted 12 first half points and hit for 19 total points to help the hot-shooting Jacks oust the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills, 78-50, in going-away fashion.
 
"Our shooting was fantastic," said HSU head coach Steve Kinder. "Allan Guei hit shots early to get us going.  It was a homecoming for him as he had a lot of family and friends here. His play became contagious for the whole team."
 
How contagious was Guei's play and HSU overall?
 
Well, HSU saw 17 of its 28 first half attempts fall through the twine including nine of 17 3-point tries to help open a 44-26 advantage over host Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-11/2-7 California Collegiate Athletic Association).
 
"This was the first time I felt we put together a complete game all season," Kinder said.
 
HSU (7-8/2-7 CCAA) saw its lead fall to no fewer than 17 points two times in the opening 10 minutes of the second stanza.
 
For the game, the Jacks made 27 of 52 from the floor and half of their 3-point tries (13 of 26).
 
Guei made seven of 10 tries and three of five from long-range for his 19-point night. He also added five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
 
Parker Farris carried over his outside shooting from last week. He was the recipient of one of Guei's assists as part of one of five triples on the night and a season-best 19 points.
 
David Howard aided the team jump out to the big first half margin as well with 13 of his 15 points in the first 20 minutes of play. He also clutched five rebounds.

Overall, HSU saw 10 of its 13 players dressed put a point in the scoring column.
 
On defense, the Jacks held the Toros to 31-percent shooting (15 of 48) and four of 23 from 3-point range.
 
"Defensively, I liked the strategy we used. We were able to close out and win possession by possession pretty much all night," added Kinder.
 
DeShaun Freeman was the lone CSU Dominguez Hills double figure scorer with 18 points.
 
Following the opening bucket, Guei scored and ran the HSU offense like an efficient motor. He scored eight points in the first 10 minutes as the Jacks built a 20-8 advantage.
 
The visiting Jacks increased the margin in the ensuing five minutes behind triples from Meni Ofodu and Howard for a 27-13 difference. Howard capped his 13-point first half with the final points of the opening half and his second and team's ninth 3-pointer and 44-26 tally.
 
HSU will look to ride the wave of momentum. It was the team's third-straight victory on the home floor of CSU Dominguez Hills.
 
"We are excited about the road win at Dominguez Hills. It is significant for our program with the championship games we have played against them," said Kinder. "Dominguez Hills has been the starting point for some winning streaks for us, and hopefully the third time is the charm. We are excited for the possibility of the sweep tomorrow night."
 
HSU will make the short trip to face one of the CCAA's leaders in Cal State Los Angeles in a 7:30 p.m. showdown Saturday night.
 
The Golden Eagles fell 64-57 to the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona in their Friday tilt.
