Rivalry renewed but Jacks come up on short end

Box Score ARCATA – There is nothing like playing your heated rivalry amidst a capacity crowd as Humboldt State faced Chico State Saturday night. All the elements were present for a another win, but the Lumberjacks came up on the short end.

Chico State made it two wins in a row playing on the Lumberjack Arena floor. The visitors went on a late first-half run and did not allow HSU make a serious second half run in an 82-70 California Collegiate Athletic Association win.

"In a big game, a rival game and a game of this magnitude, everything goes into a rivalry. In the individual environment and incredible community support, it was which team can come out on top from it. I tip my cap to Chico tonight, which showed a great deal of poise in the game," said HSU head coach Steve Kinder.

In a crowd reaching 1,850 HSU faithful, the Jacks (8-10/3-9 CCAA) had the fans on their feet for the opening 13 minutes of play where they led by as many as five points twice, 20-15 and 22-17.

The Wildcats (12-4/8-4 CCAA), though, finished the half by outscoring their host, 26-10, in the final seven minutes for a 43-32 intermission tally. They led for the rest of the night.

Despite only having five points in the first half, David Howard pumped in 19 second-half tallies for a team-best 24 points. The junior also led on the boards with eight and had two blocked shots.

Allan Guei and Parker Farris chipped in 13 points apiece. Guei dished out four assists and Farris had two 3-pointers.

Will Taylor added seven rebounds and six assists in his time on the floor. Jordan Mackie and Brandon Pomrehn rounded out the night with eight points each, respectively.

Chico State cleaned the glass for 44 rebounds to HSU's 34 and drained nine triples.

"The scouting report was proven to be true. They can shoot extremely well from the 3-point line. Our keys were to run them off the 3-point line, but we helped too much in the paint and couldn't get out to cover the perimeter," said Kinder.

The Jacks were able to get the difference down to eight points, 60-52, midway through the final half, but the Wildcats had the answer in the rivalry each time.

"Poor shot selection and not enough patience was the big difference in the game on our part," said Kinder.

Chico State received a 28-point night with five 3-pointers from Rashad Parker to lead all scorers. Sean Park and Jordan Semple added 15 points apiece.

HSU will go back on the road next weekend, starting next Friday night in a 7:30 p.m. game at Cal State San Bernardino.
