BoxscoreARCATA, Calif. – Chico State's Matt Hurlow converted an overtime penalty kick to edge Humboldt State, 2-1, in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer Friday.
After a hard takedown by the Lumberjacks' goalie in the penalty box, the Wildcats' Hurlow connected on game-winning goal and his second of the match to earn the victory.
"Today was a tough loss for our guys," said HSU Head Coach
Fred Jungemann. "We played well for long stretches and created enough chances to win the game, but in the end we made a few mistakes and to their credit Chico State made us pay for them."
The HSU (8-2-1/4-1 CCAA) loss snapped a nine-match unbeaten run. The unbeaten streak tied the nine-match run set by the 1994 team's 8-0-1 stretch.
Following an opening half with only four shots, HSU trailed, 1-0, at intermission. On a Sean Gallagher throw in, Chico State (6-4-1/1-4 CCAA) saw Hurlow head into the left side of the goal the lone score at 19:40.
After a Wildcat foul,
Johan Muliadi drove the ball to the middle of the box where
Ryan Connor touched the ball to
Riki Michael, who buried it into the back part of the net to tie the match, 1-1, in the 60
th minute.
For the fifth time in the past six matches, HSU went to overtime, but it was the first time the North Coast team did not prevail.
On a ball played down the field to the front of the box, Chico State's Akwafei Ajeakwa was taken down and awarded a penalty kick off the HSU red card. Hurlow converted the penalty kick for the win at 93:36.
"We don't have much time to dwell on this as we have another tough game coming on Sunday against CSU San Bernardino. Our guys have a great mentality and I'm sure they will be over this by tomorrow and ready to go by Sunday," said Jungemann.
HSU's Sunday match against CSU San Bernardino starts at 2 p.m.
