BoxscoreARCATA, Calif. — Humboldt State women's soccer played tough, but did not get the breaks on Friday afternoon and dropped the match, 2-0, to Chico State.
The Lumberjacks (6-5/1-4 California Collegiate Athletic Association) peppered the Wildcat goal with 12 first half shots, with two hitting the post and four saved, but they did not put one in the back of the net.
"The girls played very well today and the score was not fair for the quality we had. But the game is not always fair and we didn't take it into our hands when we needed to," said HSU Head Coach
Paul Karver.
Chico State (6-3/3-1-1 CCAA) received a quality outing from goalie Brianna Furner, who saved seven shots, and Pooja Patel, who scored a goal and assisted on the other.
HSU had its strongest run of shots midway through the opening half. At 18:04,
Erica McMullen's long attempt went high. A minute later,
Maddi Null hit the left post on a close shot and
Colette Behen hit the rebound, but Furner saved the shot.
Behen blasted another shot 30 seconds later off the right post and she had another strong boot saved close range at 22:35. McMullen completed the nine-minute flurry with a close shot from the left, which was saved.
"It was a tough result today but it was a step in a positive direction after not playing well the past few matches," said Karver. "We have to find a way to convert chances and sometimes that means it
doesn't have to be pretty, it just needs to hit the back of the net."
The Wildcats' Shelby Lanksbury took a pass from Patel on the right wing and hit the shot into the left side of the goal less than two minutes (29:27) after the Jacks' offensive attacks ended.
Patel added the second visiting score at 41:13 for a 2-0 Chico State lead, before a scoreless second half.
Goalie
Amber Woolcock saved seven Chico State shots. The two teams tied on shots attempted with 16 apiece.
HSU will wrap up its home weekend hosting No. 25 Cal State San Bernardino Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m.
