HSU Honors Seniors, Falls Short in Final Score

ARCATA, Calif. — The Humboldt State women's soccer team honored its senior players, but was unable to capture a win and fell short, 1-0, to UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon.

The Lumberjacks (6-10/1-9 California Collegiate Athletic Association) saw their various scoring opportunities fail to result in a score. The Tritons (8-5-3/5-3-2 CCAA) produced the lone score of the day when Izzy Pozurama connected on a pass from 20 yards away at 56:12.

"Couldn't be more proud of these girls this afternoon," said Jacks' Head Coach Paul Karver. "We had a game plan to attack and we executed very well, creating some pretty impressive chances against a very good team. The girls worked hard to honor a senior class that truly embodies what this program wants to be recognized for moving forward."

The Jacks fired 10 shots and four on goal against the Tritons. Seniors Lizzie Mitchell and Maddi Null accounted for eight of the shots and three attempts on goal. A third senior, Colette Behen added the fourth shot on goal.

"UC San Diego may have the best goalkeeper we have faced yet and she kept them alive for 90 minutes where others would have made mistakes," said Karver. "The growth of this group and the selfless motivation they show is amazing."

Null and Mitchell put UC San Diego's keeper Kelcie Brodsky to the test in the first part of the match. Both HSU seniors booted three shots in the opening 33 minutes of action.

After the UC San Diego goal, HSU was unable to get another shot until the final three minutes. Mitchell belted a final attempt, which the Tritons' Brodsky was able to turn away one last time.

The Jacks' senior keeper Amber Woolcock totaled seven saves of the 15 shots she faced.

The final HSU senior honored was Emilia Stefanko.

HSU completes its regular season on Thursday. The Jacks travel to Seaside to play Cal State Monterey Bay at 12:30 p.m.
