ARCATA, Calif. — In the midst of a hot North Coast Sunday, Humboldt State women's soccer faltered. San Francisco State scored 13 minutes into the match and added two more second half goals in a 3-0 shutout.
The Lumberjacks (6-4/1-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association) had at least five quality scoring chances in the first 42 minutes, but could not convert any of them into goals.
"Today was frustrating all the way around," said HSU Head Coach
Paul Karver. "San Francisco deserved to win the game today as they believed in what they were doing, and it is always challenging to overcome a team like that."
The Gators (6-4/1-3 CCAA) picked up the victory after Kelsey Wetzstein's shot diagonally from the left into the upper right side of the goal at 13:14 for the early lead, 1-0.
Wetzstein assisted on San Francisco State's second score when Rachel Acre made it a 2-0 advantage in the 57
th minute. Brittany Oldham completed the match scoring at 65:45.
"The good news is that other teams are losing as well so we are far from dead, but we do need to go back to the drawing board on a few things," said Karver.
At 2:49, HSU's
Maddi Null sent a shot sailing toward the goal, which was saved, and added a second attempt two minutes later.
Lizzie Mitchell booted a hard shot on goal in the eighth minute.
Angel Gosse drove a low liner from 25 yards only to see San Francisco State's keeper Allison Land swipe it from the air at 21:09.
The best HSU shot came from
Colette Behen's foot. The senior drove a long blast that hit off the lower part of the crossbar at 41:22.
HSU outshot San Francisco State, 9-7, in the first half, but managed only two shots in the second 45 minutes.
The Jacks will next host Chico State Friday starting at 12:30 p.m.
