Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – A classic college basketball game, but one Humboldt State was on the wrong end of the action.
For the first time of the California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule, the Lumberjacks were defeated in runaway fashion coming at the hands of the Gators of San Francisco State, 79-48.
"It was a classic college basketball game where one team couldn't throw the ball into the ocean," quipped HSU head coach
Steve Kinder. "San Francisco switched our game plan into theirs, which caused us into turnovers, they started hitting their shots and we didn't."
In fact, the visiting Jacks saw only seven of its 25 shots go through the first half, while the Gators pumped in over half of their attempts (14 of 26).
San Francisco State (12-8/10-7 CCAA) put the game's first five points on the board and nine of the opening 11 tallies and the route was on. After the opening 10 minutes, the Gators opened a 29-10 lead and were never challenged again.
"San Francisco has been playing very well, its record show that and it especially plays well at home," noted Kinder. "Tonight was very indicative (of our team). It shows something that we haven't done all year against a CCAA team (lose by a large amount of points). We played hard and battled but we couldn't make shots."
Senior
Chris Pender came off the HSU (9-14/4-13 CCAA) bench to provide a team-high 11 points including a pair of 3-pointers.
David Howard attempted a season-low five shots but made three of them for 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
San Francisco State received 14 points from both Bennie Rhodes and Derrick Brown.
"We now already planning our next game and refocusing on tomorrow night," finished the HSU coach.
HSU will play a short drive up the road in Rohnert Park against Sonoma State Saturday night starting at 7:30 p.m.
