Box Score ROHNERT PARK – After one of its worst showings of the season the previous night, Humboldt State bounced back by going nearly wire-to-wire in victory over rival Sonoma State.
Parker Farris drained a 3-pointer exactly three minutes into the contest and the Lumberjacks would never trail over the final 37 minutes of action for a 75-63 win over the Seawolves.
"We prepared ourselves in the lockerroom and at the shoot around and we really came focused to play tonight. Last night's loss gave us a sense of awareness of how important it is to come from the lockerroom ready to play," said HSU head coach
Steve Kinder.
With the win, HSU secures its 10
th victory of the year in 24 games as well as its first California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent sweep. HSU defeated Sonoma State (5-17/4-14 CCAA) by a 69-67 final in the first match in Arcata on Jan. 9.
The Jacks received double-digit nights from four players with
David Howard highlighting the group with 17 points on eight of 13 from the floor.
"We wanted to come out and play with aggression and more energy tonight," said Howard. "We want to keep fighting the rest of the season and show everyone what Lumberjack basketball is all about. Tonight, everyone chipped in for the win."
Playing all 40 minutes,
Allan Guei added 16 points, seven assists and a pair of steals.
Farris recorded his first career double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, while dishing out five assists.
"Parker played tremendous and he was tough inside. We are proud of how far he has come this week. It is significant for a freshman to have five assists and no turnovers this late in February," noted Kinder.
Brandon Pomrehn chipped in 12 points and pulled down four boards.
Chris Pender netted nine tallies.
"Brandon has certain opponents he's more confident playing against and Sonoma State is one of them. He was very comfortable," added the HSU coach. "Their on ball screens defensively was different and we were able to exploit that tonight for big night's by David (Howard) and Brandon (Pomrehn)."
Jason Walter had top home team honors with 16 points off the Sonoma State bench.
The Jacks' inside duo of Howard and Pomrehn combined to hit 11 of 16 first half shots for 23 points to help their team to a 45-35 intermission lead.
Sonoma State cut the margin down to four points on two second half occasions, 49-45 and 61-57, but could get no closer. From that point, Pomrehn stole the ball and laid the ball in and Guei made it two buckets in a row to squash any home comeback thoughts.
HSU will begin its final pair of home games next weekend when it hosts Cal State Los Angeles on Thursday night in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
