Box Score ARCATA –
Parker Farris started the night raining a triple and Humboldt State's 'Senior Night' shooting never let up to overtake Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Farris drained five 3-pointers as part of his 20-point night to lead the Lumberjacks over the Toros, 83-72, on the final home game in Lumberjack Arena of the season Saturday night.
"When you have
David Howard,
Derrick Buchanan,
Brandon Pomrehn and
Jermain Wilson inside getting touches, it creates an inside-out game. When this happens we can be effective," explained HSU head coach
Steve Kinder. "Games like this are fun to watch where team hit shots in front of another great crowd and atmosphere."
The atmosphere was another great thing to witness especially for the Jacks' two seniors – Buchanan and
Chris Pender.
The two veteran players combined for 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a block.
"It's magical here in Arcata on Senior Nights. I can't remember the last Senior Night we lost," added Kinder. "I am very proud of how both seniors played and the players played their hearts out to make that win happen for them."
Pender contributed eight points and four rebounds, while Buchanan added two points and a late-game blocked shot.
The HSU victory ties the number of victories from a year ago as it went to 11-15 and 6-14 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The night and HSU win was off the outside shooting of Farris and
Jordan Mackie.
For the second time in his first season, Farris downed at least five triples. His 3-pointers came in 10 attempts and made seven of 14 of his shots on the night. He also had three assists and three rebounds.
"Can you imagine what he will be like for his Senior Night? He will be a force in the CCAA," noted the Jacks coach.
Mackie had his best game in recent weeks with a perfect four for four night from long-range and five of seven overall for 14 points.
Allan Guei and
David Howard contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively, as the other HSU double figure scorers.
CSU Dominguez Hills (7-20/4-16 CCAA) received a huge night from forward Darnell Martin with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Moriba DeFreitas added 10 rebounds and four blocks.
The Jacks led by as many as eight points twice, 21-13 and 31-23, in the first half before having a 36-30 intermission advantage.
HSU put the game away early in the second half by starting on a 14-0 run over the first 6:22 to open a 50-30 margin.
The Toros battled back to within five points, 72-67, with 1:30 remaining off some hot shooting and home turnovers but could get no closer.
HSU will begin its last two regular season contests next Friday at Chico State in a 7:30 p.m. game.
